Quick answer: How do I become a DevOps engineer?

  1. Pay in India — DevOps engineers report ₹8.8–9.8 lakh, up 21%, from 1.2 lakh+ salaries (AmbitionBox).
  2. Measure delivery — DORA's four keys: deployment frequency, lead time, change failure rate, time to restore.
  3. Containers — 71.1% of developers use Docker (Stack Overflow 2025).
  4. US — software developer, QA and tester jobs projected +10% to 2035 (BLS).
  5. Proof — a free 15-minute CI/CD and DevOps test.

Key takeaways

  • Automate build, test and deploy.
  • Small, frequent changes reduce risk.
  • Deploy safely with canaries and rollbacks.
  • Measure with DORA metrics.
  • Build security into the pipeline.

Picture a fintech team that releases once a month in a stressful all-night session, with a manual checklist and frequent rollbacks. A DevOps engineer joins. She adds a CI pipeline that builds, tests and scans every pull request, packages the app as a container, and deploys automatically to staging. Production releases use a canary: 5% of traffic first, with automatic rollback if error rates rise. Feature flags let product turn features on separately from deploys. Within three months the team deploys several times a week, change failures drop and the all-nighters stop. The DORA metrics on the team dashboard make the improvement visible to leadership.

What DevOps and CI/CD involve

DevOps is a set of practices and culture that brings development and operations together to deliver software quickly and reliably. CI/CD is its engine. Core skills include Git workflows and code review; continuous integration (automated builds, tests, linting and security scans on every change); continuous delivery and deployment; deployment strategies such as rolling, blue-green and canary; artifact and container registries; infrastructure as code; secrets management; monitoring, logging and alerting; incident response; and measuring delivery performance.

DORA's research gives the field its most common metrics — the four keys: deployment frequency, lead time for changes, change failure rate and time to restore service.1 DORA's annual State of DevOps reports track how practices relate to performance.2 Containers are now standard in pipelines; 71.1% of developers use Docker according to Stack Overflow's 2025 survey.3 DevOps is one of India's fastest-growing tech roles: AmbitionBox lists DevOps engineers at a typical ₹8.8–9.8 lakh from more than 1.2 lakh salaries, up 21% in two years.4 In the US, BLS projects 10% growth for software developers, QA analysts and testers to 2035.5

Your CV

Show delivery improvement: "Built CI/CD with automated tests, scanning and canary releases; moved from monthly to multiple weekly deployments; change failures fell."

Interview questions, with how to answer them

"Continuous delivery vs continuous deployment?"

Delivery keeps code always releasable with a manual approval; deployment releases automatically.

"Blue-green vs canary?"

Blue-green switches all traffic between two environments; canary shifts traffic gradually and watches metrics.

"A deploy breaks production — what do you do?"

Roll back or disable via flags, restore service, then investigate and fix the pipeline gap.

"How do you manage secrets in pipelines?"

Secret managers and pipeline secret stores, never in code or logs.

"What are DORA metrics?"

Deployment frequency, lead time, change failure rate and time to restore.

Questions to ask in your interview

  • "How often do teams deploy?" — maturity.
  • "Which CI/CD tools?" — skills.
  • "Is there a platform team?" — structure.
  • "How are incidents handled?" — culture.

Map how code gets from commit to production. Fix the most painful bottleneck first — often slow or flaky pipelines. Then improve deployment safety and start measuring DORA metrics.

How AI is changing DevOps

AI coding assistants increase the volume of code changes, which puts more pressure on pipelines, tests and reviews. DevOps teams respond with faster CI, stronger automated testing and policy checks. AI also helps write pipeline configuration, analyse failures and summarise incidents. DORA's 2024 report found AI adoption raised individual productivity and job satisfaction but hurt delivery stability and throughput — a reminder that small batches and robust testing still matter. Engineers who combine automation skills with judgement about AI-generated changes are in demand.

How to build a portfolio pipeline

Take a small web app and build the full path: GitHub repository, pull request checks with tests and linting, a container build, image scanning, deployment to a free cloud tier or local Kubernetes, a canary or blue-green step, monitoring with alerts and a rollback you can demonstrate. Write a README explaining each stage and the trade-offs. This single project covers most DevOps interview questions.

Common myths about DevOps

"DevOps is a tool." It's practices and culture supported by tools.

"DevOps means no ops." Operations skills are central.

"Faster releases mean more risk." Small, frequent, automated releases usually reduce risk.

How to design a pipeline teams trust

A pipeline is only useful if developers trust it. Trust comes from speed, reliability and clear feedback. Aim for fast feedback on every pull request — linting and unit tests in a few minutes — and run slower integration and end-to-end tests in parallel or later stages. Cache dependencies and build layers to avoid repeating work. Flaky tests destroy trust quickly, so track them, fix or quarantine them, and never let "just re-run it" become normal.

Make failures easy to understand. Each stage should report clearly what failed and how to reproduce it locally. Keep pipeline configuration in the same repository as the code, reviewed like any other change, and reuse shared templates so teams don't each reinvent the same steps.

Separate building from deploying. Build an artefact or container image once, tag it with the commit, and promote that same artefact through staging to production. Rebuilding for each environment risks shipping something different from what you tested. Store configuration and secrets per environment outside the artefact.

Design deployments for safety. Use progressive rollouts — canaries or gradual percentages — with automated checks on error rates and latency, and make rollback a single, tested action. Database changes need special care: use backward-compatible migrations so old and new versions of the application can run during the rollout.

Finally, measure the pipeline itself. Track how long builds take, how often they fail for reasons unrelated to code changes and how quickly changes reach production. Improvements to the pipeline compound across every developer and every change, which is why DevOps engineers who shorten feedback loops are so valued.

How to handle secrets in CI/CD

Store secrets in the CI system's secret store or a dedicated secret manager, grant each pipeline only the secrets it needs and prefer short-lived credentials through identity federation rather than long-lived keys. Mask secrets in logs, rotate them regularly and add secret scanning to catch accidental commits early.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Tool lists without projects.
  • Weak Linux and networking.
  • No rollback plan.
  • Secrets in pipelines.
  • Ignoring monitoring.
