How to get a
data engineer job in 2027

To get a data engineer job in 2027, prove you can move data reliably: strong SQL, production-quality Python, data modelling (star schemas, slowly changing dimensions) and pipeline design that survives late data, reruns and failures. Build one end-to-end project with orchestration, tests and documentation, rehearse the pipeline system-design interview, and target product firms, GCCs and consultancies, where data engineers in India typically earn ₹11.5–12.7 lakh.

Quick answer: How do I get a data engineer job in 2027?

  1. What they hire for — reliable, tested pipelines that analysts and models can trust.
  2. Screened first — hard SQL (window functions, deduplication, incremental loads) and Python.
  3. Decisive round — pipeline system design: batch vs streaming, idempotency, backfills, cost.
  4. Tools employers name — Spark, Airflow, dbt, Kafka, and a warehouse or lakehouse (Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks).
  5. Pay — about ₹11.5–12.7 lakh typical in India; ₹17.5–19.4 lakh at 6–9 years (AmbitionBox, Oct 2026).

Key takeaways

  • Data engineering pay in India grew about 23% in two years on AmbitionBox's data — demand is real, but so is the bar.
  • Correctness under failure (reruns, late data, schema changes) is what separates engineers from script writers.
  • One deep end-to-end project with tests and docs beats five tutorial notebooks.
  • Cloud and vendor certifications help screening; system-design performance wins offers.
  • AI writes boilerplate pipeline code, which makes data modelling, testing and cost judgement more valuable.

Picture this: at 6:10 a.m. the finance team's revenue dashboard shows zero sales for yesterday. Nothing is wrong with sales. An upstream payments API changed one field's name at midnight, the nightly job loaded nulls, and nobody's pipeline noticed. The data engineer who gets paged first has two problems: fix the data before the 9 a.m. leadership review, and make sure this class of failure never reaches a dashboard again. That second instinct — building systems that fail loudly and recover cleanly — is exactly what data engineering interviews are designed to find.

What does a data engineer do in 2027?

A data engineer builds and runs the systems that turn raw data into trustworthy, timely datasets. The work covers ingestion (from app databases, event streams and SaaS tools), transformation (batch and streaming), modelling (in a warehouse or lakehouse), orchestration, data quality testing, monitoring and cost control.

Demand in India is strong and rising. AmbitionBox data updated in October 2026 puts typical data engineer pay at ₹11.5–12.7 lakh, with average pay up about 23% over the previous two years.1 The hiring comes from product companies with large event volumes, global capability centres building data platforms for their parents, consultancies migrating clients to the cloud and IT services firms running data operations.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track "data engineer" as an occupation; its closest category, database architects, had a median wage of $139,500 in May 2025.2 The World Economic Forum's 2025 report lists big data specialists among the fastest-growing roles and AI and big data as the fastest-growing skill area.8

How data engineering hiring works

Data engineering loops look like software-engineering loops with a data twist. SQL comes first; system design decides.

What hiring managers screen for

SQL that is correct at scale

Window functions, deduplication, merges and upserts, incremental models, NULL and time-zone traps. Most loops include at least one tricky SQL problem.

Production Python

Readable functions, error handling, tests, type hints and packaging — not notebook cells.

Data modelling

Choosing the grain, fact and dimension tables, slowly changing dimensions (SCD type 2) and when to denormalise.

Pipeline reliability

Idempotent jobs, retries, backfills, late-arriving data, schema changes and data contracts. Orchestrators such as Apache Airflow manage the dependencies.4

Modern stack fluency

A cloud warehouse or lakehouse, dbt for transformations and testing,5 a streaming tool such as Kafka where real-time matters, open table formats like Iceberg or Delta.

Cost and operations

Partitioning, clustering, avoiding full rescans, monitoring freshness and volume, and being calm on call.

Table: How data engineering hiring has changed (editorial summary)

Two shifts matter most for job seekers now. First, AI assistants write boilerplate pipeline code quickly, so interviews push harder on design judgement and correctness. Second, AI products need data pipelines of their own — documents chunked and embedded for retrieval, evaluation datasets, feature freshness — and engineers who understand those needs are scarce. Our RAG fundamentals guide covers that side.

Proof: one project that looks like production

A data engineering portfolio needs one serious project more than many small ones.

  • Real ingestion — pull from a public API or event source on a schedule, not a static CSV.
  • Orchestration — an Airflow (or similar) DAG with retries and clear dependencies.
  • Layered models — raw, cleaned and business-ready tables, with the grain documented.
  • Tests — freshness, uniqueness, not-null and accepted-value checks that fail the run.
  • Idempotency — rerunning a day produces the same result; show a backfill.
  • A README — architecture diagram, trade-offs you made and what you'd change at 100× scale.

Host the code publicly, keep commits meaningful and include a short demo of a failure being caught.

Résumé and LinkedIn: words recruiters search for

Recruiters filter on: Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer, Big Data Engineer, ETL Developer; SQL, Python, Spark/PySpark, Airflow, dbt, Kafka, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks, AWS/Azure/GCP, Delta/Iceberg, data modelling, CI/CD.

Write bullets with scale and reliability: "Rebuilt the nightly orders pipeline as incremental dbt models with tests; run time fell from 3 hours to 25 minutes and data incidents from weekly to none in a quarter." Use only numbers you can explain.

The data engineer interview loop, round by round
  1. SQL — Practise latest-record-per-key, sessionisation, running totals, gaps and islands, and an incremental MERGE. Say how you'd test each query.
  2. Python — Parse a messy file, transform records, handle bad rows and write a unit test. Clarity beats cleverness.
  3. Data modelling — Given an e-commerce business, define fact and dimension tables, the grain of each and how you'd track a customer's changing address (SCD type 2).
  4. Pipeline design — Clarify volume, latency and consumers first. Choose batch or streaming with reasons, then cover failure handling, backfills, data quality, monitoring and cost.
  5. Behavioural — Prepare one incident story: what broke, how you found out, what you fixed, what you changed so it couldn't recur.

The free Advanced SQL assessment, Python Programming certification and Docker test check three of these foundations; the Data Quality and Governance certification covers the testing and ownership side.

AI and the data engineer

AI raises the value of data engineering rather than replacing it. Models are only as good as their data, and AI systems add new pipelines: document ingestion and chunking, embedding refresh, evaluation sets and usage logging. At the same time, AI coding tools write first drafts of DAGs and SQL, so employers expect more output per engineer and test more deeply for judgement. Stack Overflow's 2025 survey shows SQL and Python still among the most-used languages by professional developers.3

Data engineer interview questions, with how to answer them

"How would you design a pipeline for clickstream events?"

Clarify volume, latency needs and consumers. Ingest through a stream (for example Kafka), land raw events cheaply, process in micro-batches or a streaming job, deduplicate on event IDs, handle late events with watermarks and publish modelled tables. Cover monitoring, backfills and cost.

"What makes a pipeline idempotent, and why does it matter?"

Running it twice for the same input gives the same output — achieved with deterministic keys, MERGE/upsert or overwrite-by-partition instead of blind appends. It makes retries and backfills safe.

"Explain slowly changing dimension type 2."

Keep history by adding a new row with valid-from and valid-to dates (and a current flag) whenever a tracked attribute changes, so facts join to the version that was true at the time.

"Find the latest record per customer."

ROW_NUMBER() over a partition by customer ordered by updated time descending, then keep row 1. Mention ties and NULL timestamps.

"Batch or streaming for a daily sales report?"

Batch — streaming adds cost and complexity without value if the consumer reads it daily. Show you choose the simplest thing that meets the requirement.

"A dashboard shows wrong numbers this morning. What do you do?"

Communicate first, check freshness and volume monitors, trace lineage to the failing step, fix and backfill, then add a test so the class of failure is caught next time.

"How do you reduce warehouse costs?"

Partition and cluster large tables, avoid full scans, use incremental models, schedule wisely, archive cold data and monitor the most expensive queries.

"Parquet vs CSV?"

Parquet is columnar, compressed and typed — faster and cheaper for analytics; CSV is simple but slow and error-prone at scale.

Career path: where data engineering leads

Senior (5–8 years)Senior / lead data engineerDesigning platforms, reliability, mentoring
BranchesStaff engineer, data architect, ML engineer, analytics engineering leadBroader systems, AI data or modelling focus

Table: Data engineer career path (editorial summary)

Mistakes that cost data engineering offers

  • Jumping to tools in system design before clarifying volume, latency and consumers.
  • Ignoring failure modes — no answer for reruns, late data or schema change.
  • Notebook-style code in a coding round.
  • No tests in the portfolio project.
  • Overclaiming scale you can't describe in detail.

Negotiating the offer

Use role-and-city data, the company type and the level to anchor. Data engineering offers often include on-call expectations and stock at product companies; ask about both before you counter.

How we know

Pay data comes from AmbitionBox's data engineer page (read October 2026) and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Tooling references are the official Apache Airflow, dbt, Google Cloud and AWS pages. Market context comes from the World Economic Forum and Stack Overflow's 2025 survey. Hiring stages and the history table are editorial summaries. Science of Apps publishes the free certification linked here. Last reviewed October 2026.

Key terms, defined

  • ETL / ELT — extract, transform, load; ELT loads raw data first and transforms inside the warehouse.
  • Orchestration — scheduling and managing dependencies between pipeline tasks.
  • Idempotent — a job that gives the same result however many times it runs for the same input.
  • Backfill — rerunning a pipeline for past dates to fill or correct data.
  • Grain — what one row in a table represents.
  • SCD type 2 — a slowly changing dimension that keeps history by adding a new row for each change.
  • Lakehouse — a design that stores data in open files on cheap storage with warehouse-like tables on top.

Frequently asked questions

What does a data engineer do?

A data engineer builds and runs the systems that collect, clean, transform and deliver data: ingestion from apps and third-party tools, batch and streaming pipelines, warehouse and lakehouse models, data quality tests, orchestration and monitoring. Their users are analysts, data scientists, ML systems and business teams who need trustworthy data on time.

Is data engineering a good career in India?

Yes. AmbitionBox data from October 2026 puts typical data engineer pay at ₹11.5–12.7 lakh, ₹17.5–19.4 lakh at 6–9 years, with average pay up about 23% over two years. Product companies, global capability centres, consultancies and IT services firms all hire, and the role leads to senior, staff, platform and architect positions.

Can a fresher get a data engineer job?

Some do, mostly through IT services and consulting graduate programmes or after a strong internship. Most data engineers move in from software engineering, data analysis or BI after one to three years. Freshers improve their odds with excellent SQL, solid Python and one end-to-end project that shows orchestration, testing and documentation.

Which certification is best for data engineers?

Employers recognise cloud and platform certifications such as Google Cloud's Professional Data Engineer, AWS Certified Data Engineer – Associate, Microsoft's Fabric data engineering certification and Databricks' data engineer certifications. Pick the platform your target employers use. A free, verifiable skills test is a quick way to check fundamentals first.

What is asked in a data engineer interview?

Expect SQL problems (window functions, deduplication, incremental logic), a Python coding round, a data-modelling exercise (star schema, slowly changing dimensions), a pipeline system-design round covering scale, failures and cost, and behavioural questions about incidents you handled.

Data engineer vs data analyst: which is better?

Neither is better; they suit different people. Data analysts answer business questions with data and spend more time with stakeholders. Data engineers build the systems that make data reliable and spend more time with code and infrastructure. Data engineering pays more on average in India, and many engineers start as analysts.

Do data engineers need to know Spark?

Many roles still list Spark, especially at companies with large data volumes or Databricks. But plenty of modern stacks rely on SQL inside a cloud warehouse with dbt and an orchestrator. Learn distributed processing concepts and one engine well, and match the rest to the job descriptions you target.
