Quick answer: How do I get a job as a graphic designer?

  1. Large field — 86,000+ graphic designer salaries reported in India (AmbitionBox).
  2. Pay in India — graphic designers report ₹4.3–4.7 lakh, up 12% (AmbitionBox).
  3. US outlook — $62,960 median; jobs projected −2% to 2035 (BLS).
  4. Fundamentals — layout, type, colour and composition still decide quality.
  5. Proof — a free 10-minute graphic design test.

Key takeaways

  • Solve the brief, not just the visual.
  • Typography and layout make or break work.
  • Deliver production-ready files.
  • Show range within a clear focus.
  • Use AI tools with judgement and rights awareness.

Picture a D2C skincare brand hiring a graphic designer and receiving 300 applications in a week. Most portfolios show the same thing: movie poster remakes, fake logos for famous brands and AI-generated images with heavy filters. One candidate shows six real briefs. There's a festive sale campaign for a local bakery, with posts, a WhatsApp banner and a printed standee. There's a menu redesign that cut ordering questions, and a set of product labels that went to print. Each project opens with the brief and ends with the files that shipped. Her type choices are restrained and her layouts are clean. She gets a call the same day.

What graphic designers do

Graphic designers turn messages into visuals that people notice and understand. The work spans social media content, digital ads, presentations, brochures and print, packaging and labels, event materials, logos and brand assets, and increasingly short motion pieces. The fundamentals haven't changed: layout and composition, typography, colour, imagery, visual hierarchy and production quality, applied to a brief within brand guidelines.

It's a large field in India. AmbitionBox has more than 86,000 graphic designer salary reports, with typical pay of ₹4.3–4.7 lakh, up 12% in two years.1 Senior graphic designers report ₹6.7–7.4 lakh.2 In the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median at $62,960 and projects a 2% decline in employment from 2025 to 2035, with about 16,000 openings a year from people leaving the field.3 Nielsen Norman Group's visual design principles — scale, hierarchy, balance, contrast and grouping — apply as much to a poster as to an app.4 Moving into art direction raises pay further: art directors typically earn ₹10.5–11.6 lakh in India.5

Interview questions, with how to answer them

"Walk me through a project from brief to delivery."

Brief, research, concept, drafts, feedback, final, production.

"How do you choose fonts for a project?"

Brand guidelines first, then readability, tone and pairing — usually two typefaces at most.

"What's the difference between RGB and CMYK?"

RGB is for screens; CMYK is for print. Convert and check colours before printing.

"How do you handle a client who wants 'more pop'?"

Ask what they want to achieve, then adjust hierarchy, contrast or imagery to meet that goal.

"How do you use AI tools?"

For exploration and production speed, with checks on brand fit, quality and image rights.

Questions to ask in your interview

  • "What's the split between social, print and other work?" — role scope.
  • "Are there brand guidelines?" — consistency.
  • "How many revisions are typical?" — workflow.
  • "Who reviews and approves work?" — feedback loop.

More questions interviewers ask

"How do you keep work on-brand across many assets?"

Templates, styles, guidelines and checking each piece against them.

"How do you manage tight deadlines?"

Clarify priorities, reuse templates and agree scope early.

Your first 90 days as a graphic designer

PeriodFocusWhat good looks like
Days 1–30Learn brand and workflowOn-brand work quickly
Days 31–60Own a campaignMulti-format delivery
Days 61–90Improve templatesFaster, consistent output

Table: A first-90-days plan (editorial guidance)

Learn the brand guidelines deeply and ask for examples of work the team considers excellent. Deliver reliably on smaller requests, then take ownership of a campaign. Improve templates and file organisation as you go — it makes the whole team faster and shows initiative beyond individual assets.

How to prepare files for print

Print mistakes are expensive, so employers value designers who get them right. Before sending a file to print, check six things.

Size and bleed. Set the document at final trim size and add bleed — commonly 3 mm on each side — so backgrounds extend past the trim. Keep important text inside a safe margin.

Colour mode. Convert to CMYK (or use spot colours if specified) and check that brand colours still look right; bright RGB colours often dull in print.

Resolution. Images should usually be around 300 ppi at final size for close-viewing print; large-format items can be lower.

Fonts. Embed or outline fonts so they print correctly.

Black text. Use pure black for small text to avoid fuzzy registration.

Proof. Export a print-ready PDF using the printer's preset, then review a physical or digital proof before approving.

Always confirm specifications with the printer, because requirements vary. Getting this right first time saves money and builds trust.

How AI is changing graphic design jobs

Generative AI is automating parts of routine production, such as resizing, background removal, simple variations and first-draft imagery. That's one reason US employment of graphic designers is projected to decline slightly even as demand for visual content grows. The designers who stay in demand focus on what tools do poorly: ideas, typography and layout judgement, brand consistency and turning a brief into a clear message.

Practical AI skills help too. Use generative tools to explore concepts quickly, speed up production and create mockups, while checking image rights, brand fit and quality. Many designers broaden into adjacent skills — motion, UI, brand systems or art direction — where judgement matters more. In interviews, show that you use AI as a production partner, not a replacement for thinking, and give examples of how it made your work faster or better.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Fake brand projects only.
  • Too many typefaces.
  • Ignoring the brief.
  • Files that aren't production-ready.
  • Unlicensed images.

Frequently asked questions

What does a graphic designer do?

Graphic designers create visual communication — social posts, ads, brochures, packaging, presentations, logos and brand assets — using layout, typography, colour and imagery to deliver a clear message.

How much do graphic designers earn in India?

AmbitionBox lists graphic designers at a typical ₹4.3–4.7 lakh (from 86,000+ salaries, up 12% in two years) and senior graphic designers at ₹6.7–7.4 lakh (October 2026).

Is graphic design a good career with AI tools?

Routine production is being automated, so the value shifts to concept, brand judgement, typography and layout, and directing AI outputs. Designers who move toward brand, UI, motion or art direction grow fastest.

Do I need a degree to become a graphic designer?

Not always. Many employers hire on portfolio strength, though degrees and diplomas help with fundamentals and networks.

What should a graphic design portfolio include?

8–12 strong pieces grouped as projects, each showing the brief, your idea, the final work and real applications — across a few formats relevant to the jobs you want.

What's the job outlook for graphic designers?

In the US, the BLS projects a 2% decline from 2025 to 2035 but still about 16,000 openings a year; in India, demand is driven by digital marketing, e-commerce and agencies.
