AI skills for
sales professionals

Salespeople in 2027 are expected to use AI for prospect research, genuinely personalised outreach, call preparation and follow-ups, CRM hygiene and forecasting — while protecting accuracy, buyer trust and email deliverability. Top performers use AI agents more, but spammy AI outreach now gets filtered and ignored. Show pipeline results from AI-assisted work, keep claims accurate and confirm your skills with a free test.

Quick answer: How should salespeople use AI?

  1. Mainstream — 54% of sellers had used AI agents by early 2026 (Salesforce State of Sales).
  2. Top performers — 1.7× more likely to use prospecting agents than underperformers.
  3. Expected gains — sellers expect agents to cut research time 34% and email drafting 36%.
  4. Deliverability — Gmail requires bulk senders to keep spam rates below 0.3%.
  5. Proof — pipeline and conversion results from AI-assisted work.

Key takeaways

  • AI frees selling time by handling research, drafting and admin.
  • Personalisation must be real and accurate — buyers spot generic AI outreach.
  • Volume without relevance damages deliverability and reputation.
  • Clean CRM data makes AI forecasting useful; garbage in, garbage out.
  • Never let AI make claims about pricing, features or terms you haven't checked.

Picture two SDRs at a B2B software company, each told to book meetings with mid-market logistics firms. The first uses an AI tool to send 1,500 "personalised" emails a week. Each opens with a compliment on the prospect's "impressive growth" and mentions a feature the product doesn't have. Reply rates fall, spam complaints rise, and the company's domain gets throttled. The second uses AI to research 60 accounts a week: recent news, job postings for warehouse roles, a new depot opening. She writes a specific first line for each, checks product claims against the sales deck, and prepares for every call with an AI brief she verifies. She books more meetings with a tenth of the volume. Her manager asks her to train the team.

What AI skills mean in sales

For SDRs, account executives, business development and account managers, AI skills mean using AI to spend more time actually selling: researching accounts, drafting relevant outreach, preparing for and following up on calls, keeping the CRM accurate and forecasting better — while protecting buyer trust, accuracy and deliverability.

The shift is fast. Salesforce's 2026 State of Sales research, surveying more than 4,000 sales professionals, found 54% of sellers had used AI agents and nearly nine in ten planned to by 2027. Sellers expected agents to cut prospect research time by 34% and email drafting by 36%, and top performers were 1.7 times more likely than underperformers to use prospecting agents.1 Research in customer-facing work points the same way: a large study found AI assistance raised support agents' productivity by 14% on average, most for less experienced staff.3

Interview questions, with how to answer them

"How do you use AI in prospecting?"

For research and first drafts; you verify facts and write the insight that makes it relevant.

"How do you avoid sounding like a bot?"

Fewer, better emails; one specific, true observation; your own voice; no fake familiarity.

"AI drafted a follow-up promising a discount. What now?"

Remove it unless approved; check every commercial term; AI never commits on pricing.

"How would you use AI to improve forecasting?"

Clean CRM data first, then use AI risk signals as prompts for deal reviews — not as the forecast itself.

"What are the deliverability risks of AI outreach?"

High volume and low relevance raise complaints and bounces, damaging domain reputation and inbox placement.

  • Outreach — drafts edited into real messages.
  • Calls — prep briefs and automatic notes.
  • Follow-ups — summaries checked for accuracy.
  • CRM — updated with AI help.
  • Pipeline reviews — AI flags, human judgement.

More questions interviewers ask

"What wouldn't you automate in sales?"

Discovery conversations, negotiation, relationship moments and any commitment on price or terms.

"How do you handle a prospect who asks if your email was written by AI?"

Honestly — explain AI helped with research and you wrote the message because of something specific about them.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Volume over relevance.
  • Invented compliments and facts.
  • AI promising terms.
  • Dirty CRM data.
  • Ignoring deliverability.

Your first 90 days in an AI-enabled sales role

PeriodFocusWhat good looks like
Days 1–30Learn the product, ICP and approved AI toolsYou can research an account in under 10 minutes and verify every fact
Days 31–60Build a personal outreach and call-prep workflowReply rates on targeted sequences beat the team baseline
Days 61–90Share what works; clean your CRM dataYour notes and stages are trusted in pipeline reviews

Table: A first-90-days plan (editorial guidance)

The first quarter is where habits form. Sellers who start by sending volume with AI usually spend the next quarter repairing their domain reputation and their manager's trust. Sellers who start by learning the customer, using AI to go deeper on fewer accounts, and logging accurate notes build a pipeline that holds up in forecast calls. Keep a simple weekly log: accounts researched, messages sent, replies, meetings, and one AI mistake you caught. After 90 days that log is the best evidence you have in a performance review, and it's exactly the story hiring managers want to hear at your next interview. If your team has no shared prompts or research templates yet, offer to build the first version; that small piece of initiative often leads to owning sales enablement or RevOps work later.

How we know

Sales AI adoption and expected gains come from Salesforce's 2026 State of Sales announcement; deliverability rules from Google's email sender guidelines; productivity evidence from NBER Working Paper 31161; liability for AI statements from the 2024 Air Canada decision via MobileSyrup; and India pay from AmbitionBox (read October 2026). Examples, formats and history are editorial. Science of Apps publishes the free certification linked here. Last reviewed October 2026.

Key terms, defined

  • SDR / BDR — sales or business development representative who generates meetings.
  • Personalisation — tailoring outreach to a specific prospect's situation.
  • Deliverability — whether emails reach the inbox rather than spam.
  • CRM hygiene — keeping customer records accurate and up to date.
  • Sales agent (AI) — an AI system that performs sales tasks under supervision.

Frequently asked questions

How do salespeople use AI?

For researching accounts and contacts, drafting personalised outreach, preparing for calls, summarising calls and writing follow-ups, updating the CRM, scoring leads and forecasting. AI agents increasingly handle parts of prospecting and admin under seller supervision.

Will AI replace salespeople?

It is taking over research, drafting and admin work, but complex sales still depend on trust, discovery, negotiation and relationships. Salesforce's 2026 research found top performers more likely to use AI agents, suggesting AI amplifies good sellers rather than replacing them.

Does AI-written outreach work?

Only when it's relevant and accurate. Generic, high-volume AI emails get ignored or flagged as spam, which hurts the sender's domain. Use AI to research and draft, then add genuine insight and check every claim.

What are the email deliverability rules for sales outreach?

Major mailbox providers require bulk senders to authenticate their domains, offer easy unsubscribe and keep spam complaint rates low — Google's guidelines say below 0.3%. Local laws on consent and marketing messages also apply.

How can AI help with sales forecasting?

AI can flag deals at risk based on activity, engagement and history, and suggest forecast adjustments. It only works with accurate, up-to-date CRM data, so AI-assisted CRM hygiene comes first.

What AI skills should an SDR learn?

Fast account research, writing relevant first lines, sequencing outreach thoughtfully, using AI call prep, logging activity accurately, and knowing deliverability and compliance basics.
