Financial modelling
skills and careers

Financial modelling means building spreadsheets that forecast a business's performance and value so people can make decisions. The core skills are linking the three statements, driving forecasts from clear assumptions, structuring models cleanly, running scenarios and sensitivities, building error checks and presenting outputs simply. These skills are used in FP&A, banking, consulting and startups. Build a three-statement model and verify your skills with a free 15-minute test.

Quick answer: How do I learn financial modelling?

  1. Pay in India — financial modelling analysts report ₹6.5–7.2 lakh (AmbitionBox, small sample).
  2. Demand — financial analyst pay rose 20% in two years (AmbitionBox).
  3. US — financial analysts earn a $103,570 median (BLS).
  4. Free benchmarks — Damodaran's NYU data pages cover industry ratios.
  5. Proof — a free 15-minute financial modelling test.

Key takeaways

  • Separate inputs, calculations, outputs.
  • Drive everything from assumptions.
  • The balance sheet must balance.
  • Build checks into the model.
  • Keep outputs decision-ready.

Picture a startup founder asking an analyst, "How much should we raise?" The founder's spreadsheet has revenue typed into each month, costs copied from a template and no balance sheet. The analyst rebuilds it: an assumptions sheet with customers, conversion, price, churn, hiring plan and payment terms; calculations that flow into linked statements; and a cash line showing the lowest point. It turns out the company runs out of cash in month 14, not month 20, because customers pay in 60 days. With scenarios for slower growth, the right raise is 40% larger than the founder planned. A clean model changed a major decision.

What financial modelling involves

Financial modelling is building spreadsheet representations of a business or project to support decisions — budgets, fundraising, investments, acquisitions, pricing or loans. The work includes gathering historical data; setting assumptions and drivers; forecasting revenue, costs and capex; linking income statement, balance sheet and cash flow; adding debt, tax and working capital schedules; running scenarios and sensitivities; valuation such as discounted cash flow (DCF); building checks; and presenting outputs clearly. Good models are accurate, transparent and easy for others to follow and change.

Modelling skills are in demand across finance. AmbitionBox lists financial modelling analysts in India at a typical ₹6.5–7.2 lakh from a small sample,1 and financial analysts — a much larger group that relies on modelling — at the same range from more than 55,000 salaries, up 20% in two years.2 US financial analysts earn a $103,570 median.3 Free benchmark data, such as Aswath Damodaran's NYU Stern pages on industry margins and costs of capital, helps make assumptions realistic.4 Models matter most when cash is tight: CB Insights' 2026 analysis found capital ran out in 70% of startup shutdowns, with unsustainable unit economics a factor in 19%.5

Interview questions, with how to answer them

"Walk me through how depreciation flows through the statements."

It reduces profit on the P&L, is added back in operating cash flow and reduces fixed assets on the balance sheet.

"Your balance sheet doesn't balance — how do you fix it?"

Check the cash flow links first, then each balance sheet movement, using the checks sheet to find where the difference starts.

"How do you choose assumptions?"

From history, management plans, industry benchmarks and logic, and document the source of each.

"What makes a model easy to audit?"

Consistent formulas across rows, colour-coded inputs, no hard-codes in calculations and clear labels.

"How do you present a model?"

Lead with the decision and key outputs, show scenarios and highlight the assumptions that matter most.

Questions to ask in your interview

More questions interviewers ask

"What's working capital in a model?"

Receivables, inventory and payables driven by days assumptions, affecting cash.

How AI is changing financial modelling

AI now writes formulas, explains other people's models, builds first drafts and summarises outputs. That saves time, but AI-generated formulas can be subtly wrong, and models built by AI may hide assumptions. Strong modellers use AI as an assistant: they keep the structure clear, check every formula, test with checks and scenarios, and stay responsible for the logic.

How to check a model for errors

Use a checks sheet: balance sheet balances, cash matches, subtotals add up. Scan rows for inconsistent formulas. Look for hard-coded numbers in calculation sheets. Test extreme inputs — zero revenue, double costs — and see if results make sense. Ask a colleague to review. Most expensive errors are simple ones nobody checked.

How to present a model's results

Open with the decision and recommendation. Show a summary of key outputs — revenue, profit, cash low point, value — under each scenario. Highlight the two or three assumptions that matter most and how sensitive results are to them. Keep detailed sheets for questions. Leaders want clarity, not formulas.

Common myths about financial modelling

"More complex models are better." Simpler models are easier to trust and use.

"The model predicts the future." It explores possibilities based on assumptions.

"Modelling is just Excel skill." Business understanding drives good assumptions.

How to build a startup financial model

Startups have little history, so their models are driven by assumptions about customers and costs. Begin with the revenue engine: how many customers you can acquire each month, at what cost, how many stay and how much they pay. Model these as drivers on the inputs sheet — marketing spend, cost per acquisition, conversion, churn and price — rather than typing revenue directly.

Next, build the cost base: a hiring plan by role and month, salaries, tools, rent and variable costs per customer such as hosting or delivery. Add payment terms, because customers who pay in 60 days create a cash gap that a profit view hides. Then link everything to monthly statements and a cash balance.

The most important output is the cash low point: the month when cash is lowest and how far it falls. That tells founders how much to raise and when. Add scenarios for slower growth and higher churn, and show how long the runway lasts in each. Investors will test your assumptions, so keep them visible, sourced where possible and easy to change. A simple, honest startup model is far more useful than a complicated one nobody trusts.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Hard-codes in formulas.
  • No checks.
  • Unclear assumptions.
  • Unbalanced balance sheets.
  • Cluttered outputs.

Key terms, defined

  • Three-statement model — linked P&L, balance sheet and cash flow.
  • Assumption — an input that drives forecasts.
  • Sensitivity — how outputs change with inputs.
  • DCF — discounted cash flow valuation.

FP&A analysts, investment bankers, equity researchers, consultants, startup founders and project finance teams.

What's a sensitivity table?

A grid showing how an output, like profit or value, changes when one or two inputs change.

What do modelling roles pay?
