Quick answer: How do you plan a product launch and go-to-market?
- Adoption is the goal — 80% of features are rarely or never used (Pendo).
- Launch tiers — match effort to impact: major, standard, minor.
- Reduce risk — betas, feature flags and staged rollouts.
- Pay in India — product marketing managers report ₹21.1–23.4 lakh, up 23% (AmbitionBox).
- Proof — a free 15-minute launch and go-to-market test.
Key takeaways
- Launch to a specific customer, not everyone.
- Positioning first, messaging second.
- Tier launches by impact.
- Enable sales and support before day one.
- Measure adoption, not announcements.
Picture a fintech company launching a business credit card. The product team wants a big-bang launch with a press event, a celebrity ad and availability for every business on day one. The product marketing manager argues for a different plan. Positioning is narrowed to online sellers who need working capital during sale seasons. The card goes first to 2,000 sellers already on the company's payments platform, with a feature flag limiting approvals. Sales and support get a two-page brief and answers to the ten most likely questions. Messaging is tested on three landing pages. When a bug in limit calculations appears in week one, only a few hundred users are affected. The full launch three weeks later lands with tested messaging and a fixed product, and adoption beats plan.

What product launch and GTM involve
Go-to-market (GTM) covers how a product reaches and wins customers. The core skills are choosing the target segment, positioning against alternatives, crafting messaging, setting pricing and packaging, choosing channels, tiering launches by impact, enabling sales, support and partners, de-risking with betas, feature flags and staged rollouts, and measuring adoption and learning after launch.
Launches are about adoption, not announcements. Pendo found that 80% of features are rarely or never used,1 which often reflects launches that shipped but didn't reach the right users. Testing reduces launch risk: Harvard Business Review's account of online experiments shows how controlled tests reveal what actually moves results.2 Staged rollouts rely on reliability targets — Google's SRE book describes service level objectives as the threshold for when to slow or pause changes.3 Product marketing is a well-paid path. AmbitionBox lists product marketing managers in India at a typical ₹21.1–23.4 lakh, up 23% in two years,4 alongside product managers at ₹22.1–24.5 lakh.5

Start by reviewing past launches and what happened afterwards. Introduce launch tiers and simple templates so effort matches impact. Then run a launch end to end with clear positioning, enablement, a staged rollout and adoption metrics.
How AI is changing launches
AI tools now draft positioning, messaging variations, sales briefs and FAQs in minutes, and can analyse customer feedback to suggest which benefits resonate. That speeds launch preparation, but generic AI copy can blur differentiation. The positioning still has to come from real customer insight and a clear view of competitors.
Launching AI features adds new work. Teams need to set expectations about what the feature can and can't do, disclose AI use where required, prepare support for questions about errors, and roll out gradually while monitoring quality and cost. Many companies now launch AI features as betas with clear labels and feedback channels. In interviews, show how you'd use AI to prepare launches faster, and how you'd launch an AI feature responsibly.
How to write a positioning statement
A simple template keeps positioning focused: For [target customer] who [need or problem], [product] is a [category] that [key benefit]. Unlike [alternative], it [key difference].
For example: "For online sellers who need cash during sale seasons, the card is a business credit line that approves limits based on payment history in minutes. Unlike bank cards, it doesn't need audited financials."
Base each part on evidence from customer interviews and win-loss analysis. Test it with customers and sales teams, and refine the language until customers repeat it back naturally. Then build messaging — headlines, proof points and calls to action — from the positioning, not the other way round.
How to run a launch retrospective
Two to four weeks after launch, gather the PM, product marketing, engineering, sales and support. Compare results with the goals you set: adoption by the target segment, activation, revenue and support volume. Then discuss what went well, what didn't and why. Look at the whole process — positioning, enablement, rollout, communication — not only the product. Turn the findings into two or three concrete changes to your launch checklist or templates, assign owners, and share a short written summary. Teams that run honest retrospectives launch better every quarter.
Mistakes that cost candidates
- Launching to everyone.
- Messaging before positioning.
- Unprepared sales and support.
- Big-bang releases without flags.
- Measuring launches by press.
