How to become a
technical recruiter

To become a technical recruiter in 2027, learn enough technology to talk credibly with engineers and hiring managers: what different roles do, common languages, frameworks and cloud tools, how to read a GitHub profile, and how coding assessments and technical interviews work. Then show strong sourcing, personalised outreach and fair screening. Demand for AI engineering skills is rising fast in India. Build a tech glossary and verify your skills with a free 15-minute test.

Quick answer: How do I become a technical recruiter?

  1. Pay in India — technical recruiters report ₹3.9–4.3 lakh from 15,000+ salaries (AmbitionBox).
  2. AI demand — AI engineering postings in India rose 59.5% year on year (LinkedIn via IANS, April 2026).
  3. Common tools — Docker is used by 71.1% of developers surveyed (Stack Overflow, 2025).
  4. Best predictor — structured interviews rank top for predicting performance (Sackett et al., 2022).
  5. Proof — a free 15-minute technical recruitment test.

Key takeaways

  • Learn the tech vocabulary.
  • Understand what each role really does.
  • Personalise every outreach.
  • Screen for skills, not keywords.
  • Respect engineers' time.

Picture a technical recruiter messaging a backend engineer. The first draft says: "Hi, exciting opportunity with a leading MNC, Java developer, 5+ years, immediate joiners preferred." She deletes it. Instead she looks at the engineer's GitHub, sees contributions to a Kafka-based event pipeline, and writes: "Your work on event streaming caught my eye — our payments team is rebuilding settlement on Kafka and needs someone who has run it in production. The interview is one system design conversation and one paired coding session, no puzzles. Open to a 15-minute call?" She gets a reply the same day.

What technical recruiters do

Technical recruiters hire for technology roles: software engineers, data scientists and analysts, machine learning and AI engineers, DevOps and site reliability engineers, cloud architects, security specialists, QA and product roles. The work includes understanding each role's real responsibilities and tech stack; sourcing on LinkedIn, GitHub, Stack Overflow, communities and referrals; writing personalised outreach; screening for skills; coordinating coding assessments and technical interviews; calibrating with engineering managers; and closing offers in a competitive market.

The market moves fast. LinkedIn data reported by IANS in April 2026 showed AI engineering job postings in India up 59.5% year on year.1 Recruiters need a working vocabulary of current tools: in Stack Overflow's 2025 Developer Survey, Docker was used by 71.1% of respondents, AWS by 43.3% and Kubernetes by 28.5%.2 Hiring well still depends on good assessment — Sackett and colleagues' 2022 re-analysis ranked structured interviews as the top predictor of job performance3 — and skills-based hiring expands talent pools 6.1 times globally, according to LinkedIn.4 In India, AmbitionBox lists technical recruiters at a typical ₹3.9–4.3 lakh from more than 15,000 salaries.5

Interview questions, with how to answer them

"How do you source senior engineers?"

Target where they contribute — GitHub, communities, conference talks — and write specific messages about the problem they'd solve.

"What's the difference between a data analyst and a data engineer?"

Analysts answer business questions with data; data engineers build the pipelines and systems that move and store it.

"How do you screen without being technical?"

Ask about systems they built, decisions they made and problems they solved; partner with engineers for deeper evaluation.

"Engineers ignore recruiter messages — how do you get replies?"

Be specific, brief and honest about the role, team, tech and process; avoid generic templates.

"How do you handle a counter-offer?"

Understand motivations early, keep in touch through notice periods and be honest about trade-offs.

Questions to ask in your interview

  • "Which roles are hardest to fill?" — challenge.
  • "How are technical interviews structured?" — process.
  • "How involved are engineers in hiring?" — partnership.
  • "What's the referral rate?" — culture.

More questions interviewers ask

A coding or design task candidates complete in their own time — keep it short and relevant.

"What's a tech stack?"

The set of languages, frameworks and tools a team uses to build its product.

Spend time with engineers to understand their work and stacks. Build role-specific sourcing strategies. By the third month, work with engineering managers to streamline the interview process.

How AI is changing tech recruiting

AI now suggests candidates, writes outreach drafts, screens CVs and even runs early coding assessments. Candidates use AI too — for CVs, messages and sometimes coding tests — so assessments are shifting toward live problem-solving, explaining past work and paired sessions. Meanwhile, demand for AI engineers is growing, and recruiters need to understand roles like ML engineer, AI engineer and data scientist well enough to tell them apart and screen credibly.

How to read a GitHub profile

Look at pinned repositories and recent contributions rather than total stars. Check the languages used, whether projects have documentation and tests, and whether the person contributes to other people's projects — a sign of collaboration. Remember many excellent engineers have little public work because their code is private, so treat GitHub as a helpful signal, never a requirement. Use what you find to personalise outreach, not to judge.

How to design a fair technical interview loop

Agree the few skills that matter most with the hiring manager — for example coding, system design and collaboration. Assign one interview to each skill, with prepared questions and a scoring guide. Avoid trick puzzles that don't reflect real work. Keep the total time reasonable, especially for take-homes. Train interviewers to score independently before discussing. A clear, respectful loop improves both hiring quality and acceptance rates.

Common myths about tech recruiting

"You must be an engineer." Curiosity and willingness to learn the basics are enough.

"Keyword matching works." Skills and real work matter more than buzzwords.

"Engineers only care about money." Problems, team, tech and growth matter a lot.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Generic outreach templates.
  • Confusing roles and technologies.
  • Overlong interview loops.
  • Keyword-only screening.
  • Ignoring candidates after tests.
