AI coding assistant
skills employers want

Employers in 2027 expect developers to be proficient with AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Claude Code: giving good context and repository instructions, sizing tasks, using agent mode for multi-file changes, running tests and tools, reviewing every diff, keeping code secure, and measuring whether the tools actually help. Daily use is common, trust isn't. Show a project built with an agent under tight review and verify your skills with a free test.

Quick answer: How do I become proficient with AI coding assistants?

  1. Daily use — 47% of developers use AI tools every day (Stack Overflow, 2025).
  2. Frustration — 66% say AI solutions are often 'almost right, but not quite'.
  3. Speed isn't automatic — experienced developers were 19% slower with AI in METR's 2025 trial.
  4. What's valued — context, task sizing, agent mode, review, tests, security, measurement.
  5. Proof — an agent-built feature with your spec, tests and review notes.

Key takeaways

  • Proficiency means getting correct, maintainable code — not the most code.
  • Context and repository instructions shape output quality more than clever prompts.
  • Small, testable tasks beat large, vague ones.
  • Every AI diff is reviewed like a colleague's.
  • Measure your own speed and quality instead of assuming.

Picture a pair-programming interview where the candidate can use any AI tool. One candidate types the whole feature request into an agent, accepts 800 lines across twelve files and runs out of time debugging a failure they don't understand. The other opens the repository's instructions file, asks the agent to read the relevant modules and propose a plan, and breaks the work into three steps. For each step they ask for tests first, run them, read the diff and push back twice: once on an invented library function, once on a change to a file that shouldn't have been touched. They finish with less code and green tests, and they can explain every line. The interviewers weren't testing whether candidates could use AI. They were testing whether candidates could use it well.

What AI coding assistant proficiency means

AI coding assistant proficiency is getting correct, secure, maintainable code from tools like GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Claude Code6, efficiently. It covers giving the right context, sizing tasks, using agent mode for multi-step changes, running tests and tools, reviewing diffs, avoiding security pitfalls, and measuring whether the tools are actually helping.

Use is widespread; trust isn't. Stack Overflow's 2025 survey found 47% of developers using AI tools daily and 84% using or planning to use them, while 66% said AI solutions were often "almost right, but not quite" and more developers distrusted AI accuracy than trusted it.1 Google's announcement of DORA's 2025 research reported around 90% of technology professionals using AI and described AI as an amplifier of existing practice.3 Speed isn't guaranteed: METR's 2025 randomised trial found experienced open-source developers took 19% longer with AI tools on codebases they knew well, while believing they'd been faster.2 At the other extreme, about a quarter of Y Combinator's Winter 2025 startups reported codebases around 95% AI-generated.4 Proficiency is what separates the two outcomes.

The skills that matter

Context and instructions

Relevant files, repository instruction files, conventions, commands and constraints.

Task sizing

Small, verifiable steps with clear acceptance criteria — not "build the feature".

Agent mode

Plans first, multi-file edits with tests, iterating on real errors.

Review and tests

Reading every diff; tests that prove behaviour; running the code.

Security

No secrets in prompts, checked dependencies, and attention to injection and access control — AI can suggest packages that don't exist.5

Productivity measurement

Cycle time, defects and rework before and after — not lines of code.

Worked example: a repository instructions file

# AGENTS.md / repository instructions

## Commands
- Install: pnpm install • Test: pnpm test • Lint: pnpm lint

## Architecture
- API routes in src/api; business logic in src/services; never query the DB from routes.
- Use the existing Result<T> type for errors; don't throw in services.

## Conventions
- TypeScript strict; no `any`. Zod for input validation.
- New code needs unit tests; keep functions under 40 lines.

## Don't
- Don't edit generated files in src/gen.
- Don't add dependencies without asking.

A file like this gives every assistant the same context a new teammate would need, and it cuts down the most common AI mistakes.

Interview questions, with how to answer them

"How do you decide how much to delegate?"

Clear, testable tasks go to the agent; ambiguous design and security-critical logic stay with you.

"The agent says tests pass but the feature is wrong. What happened?"

Tests didn't capture the requirement, or the agent changed the tests. Review test diffs and write acceptance tests yourself.

"How do you give an assistant context?"

Relevant files, repository instructions, the goal, constraints and real error output.

"How do you avoid security issues?"

No secrets in prompts, dependency checks, review for injection and access control, and scanning in CI.

"Does AI make you faster?"

Answer with measurements from your own work — and where it didn't help.

How proficiency shows up day to day

  • Planning — agent proposes, you approve or adjust.
  • Small diffs — reviewed quickly and thoroughly.
  • Tests first — behaviour pinned down before code.
  • Debugging — AI explanations confirmed in the code.
  • Dependency checks — real, maintained packages only.
  • Retros — what AI helped with, and what it didn't.

More questions interviewers ask

"When is vibe coding fine?"

For throwaway prototypes and personal tools — not for code others will maintain or that handles real data.

"How do you keep AI code consistent with the codebase?"

Instruction files, examples of preferred patterns, linting and review against conventions.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Huge unread diffs.
  • Letting agents edit tests to pass.
  • No repository context.
  • Invented APIs and packages accepted.
  • Claimed speed-ups without evidence.

Your first 90 days on a team that uses coding agents

PeriodFocusWhat good looks like
Days 1–30Read the codebase; write or improve the repository instructions fileYour agent tasks follow conventions without reminders
Days 31–60Deliver small features test-first with an agentReviews find few issues; no reverted changes
Days 61–90Measure your cycle time; share prompts and patternsEvidence of faster, safer delivery, with honest exceptions

Table: A first-90-days plan (editorial guidance)

Teams notice quickly whether a new developer's AI-generated pull requests are a gift or a burden. The difference is almost always context and size. Spend the first weeks understanding the architecture yourself — reading code, running tests, asking questions — before you delegate. Keep pull requests small, write or review the tests first, and annotate the parts the agent wrote that you changed. Record a few numbers: time from ticket to merge, review comments per change and defects found later. If the numbers show AI helping, you have a strong story; if they don't for certain kinds of work, say so. Engineers who can explain where agents help and where they don't are the ones asked to shape team practices.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI coding assistant should I learn?

Learn the one your target employers use and one agent-style tool. Popular options include GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Claude Code. The core skills — context, task sizing, review and testing — transfer between them.

What is agent mode in coding assistants?

Agent mode lets the assistant plan and carry out multi-step tasks: reading the repository, editing several files, running commands and tests, and iterating on errors. It's powerful for well-specified tasks and needs careful review.

Do AI coding assistants make developers faster?

Sometimes. Results depend on the task, codebase and developer. A 2025 randomised trial by METR found experienced developers took 19% longer on familiar codebases with AI tools, though they believed they were faster. Measure your own work.

What is vibe coding?

Vibe coding means building software by describing what you want to an AI and accepting its code with little review. It's useful for prototypes and personal tools, but risky for production code, where review, tests and security matter.

How do I give an AI coding assistant better context?

Point it to relevant files, keep a repository instructions file with conventions, commands and architecture notes, describe the goal and constraints, and share error messages and test output.

How should I review AI-generated code?

Check it solves the actual problem, handles edge cases and errors, uses real APIs and packages, follows your architecture and style, has meaningful tests, and introduces no security issues or secrets.
