App localization
careers

App localization adapts software for each language and market: externalised strings, layouts that handle longer text and right-to-left scripts, correct dates, numbers and currencies, cultural fit and thorough QA. CSA Research found 76% of online shoppers prefer products with information in their own language. Localization specialists in India report ₹7.4–8.2 lakh. Quick answer: How do I start a career in app localization?

  1. Customers — 76% prefer products with information in their own language; 40% never buy from sites in other languages (CSA Research).
  2. Market — language services reached $71.7 billion in 2024 (Nimdzi).
  3. India pay — localization specialists ₹7.4–8.2 lakh; localization engineers ₹4.1–5.0 lakh (AmbitionBox).
  4. Skills — i18n, layout, formats, culture, QA.
  5. Proof — a free 25-minute App & Software Localization test.

Key takeaways

  • Internationalize before you localize.
  • Never hard-code text.
  • Formats differ by locale.
  • Design for longer text and RTL.
  • Test in context.

Picture a fintech app launching in Germany and the Gulf. In testing, the German "Continue" button reads "Weiter zur Zahlungsbestätigung" and spills off the screen. Arabic screens show text right-to-left but icons still point the wrong way. Prices show "1,000.50" where German users expect "1.000,50". A localization specialist catches all three in a week of in-context QA: designers make buttons flexible, developers mirror the layout for Arabic, and engineers switch to locale-aware number formatting. Launch day goes smoothly in both markets.

What app localization involves

App localization makes software feel native in each market. It starts with internationalization (i18n) — building the product so text, layouts and formats can change without code changes. Then localization (l10n) adapts it: translating interface strings, adjusting layouts for longer text or right-to-left scripts, formatting dates, numbers, currencies and addresses, adapting images and cultural references, meeting local regulations, and testing everything in context. The W3C describes localization as adapting content to meet "the language, cultural and other requirements" of a market, and internationalization as designing it so that adaptation is easy.1

Localization drives revenue. CSA Research's survey of 8,709 consumers in 29 countries found 76% prefer buying products with information in their native language, and 40% will never buy from websites in other languages.2 The wider language services market reached $71.7 billion in 2024, according to Nimdzi.3 In India, AmbitionBox lists localization specialists at a typical ₹7.4–8.2 lakh (small sample)4 and localization engineers at ₹4.1–5.0 lakh.5

Interview questions, with how to answer them

"What's internationalization?"

Designing software so it can be adapted to languages and regions without engineering changes.

"Why shouldn't you concatenate strings?"

Word order differs by language; use full sentences with placeholders.

"How do you handle plurals?"

Use plural rules by language — some have more than two forms.

"How do you QA a localized app?"

Test screens in each language, check layout, formats, context and functionality.

"How do you support right-to-left languages?"

Mirror layouts, align text right, and handle bidirectional text and icons.

Questions to ask in your interview

  • "Which markets and languages are planned?" — scope.
  • "Is the product internationalized already?" — maturity.
  • "Which TMS do you use?" — tools.
  • "How is translation quality measured?" — standards.

How localization shows up day to day

  • String handoffs — from developers.
  • Translation rounds — with linguists.
  • Queries — context questions.
  • QA — screenshots and builds.
  • Bugs — layout and format fixes.
  • Releases — coordinated launches.

More questions interviewers ask

"What's a locale?"

A combination of language and region, like fr-CA or en-IN.

"What is text expansion?"

Translations often take more space than English, so layouts must flex.

Table: A first-90-days plan (editorial guidance)

Learn the product, file formats and translation workflow first. Then strengthen in-context QA. By the third month, work with engineers to fix root causes like hard-coded strings.

How AI is changing localization

Machine translation now drafts most software strings in minutes, and AI tools can flag layout problems in screenshots. That shifts work toward context, quality review, terminology and cultural judgement. Localization professionals who combine AI speed with careful in-context QA deliver faster releases without embarrassing errors.

How to give translators context

Strings out of context are hard to translate. Provide screenshots, character limits, descriptions of placeholders and notes on tone. Context reduces queries and errors.

How to run pseudo-localization

Replace English strings with longer, accented versions like "[Ŝéttîñĝš ~~~]" and run the app. Missing brackets or cut-off text reveal hard-coded strings and tight layouts early.

How to prioritize markets

Look at user data, revenue potential, competitors and regulatory needs. Start with fewer languages done well rather than many done badly.

How to localize images and content

Check images for text baked into graphics, gestures or symbols that mean different things in different cultures, and examples that don't fit local users. Adapt names, addresses and payment methods in screenshots and onboarding. Review legal text and holidays for each market. Good localization covers everything users see, not just interface strings.

Common myths about localization

"Localization is just translation." It includes layout, formats and culture.

"English layouts will stretch fine." Text expansion breaks fixed designs.

"One Spanish fits all." Regional variants differ.

How to handle plurals and gender in strings

English has two plural forms, but many languages have more: Russian and Polish use several, while Arabic has six. Some languages also change words depending on gender. Hard-coded rules like adding an 's' break immediately. Use your platform's plural and select features so translators can supply every form, and give them examples of the numbers involved. Testing with values like 0, 1, 2, 5 and 21 helps reveal problems before users see them.

How to work with developers on localization

Developers decide whether text is externalised, whether layouts can flex and whether formats use locale libraries. Join early design and code reviews, share a short internationalization checklist and explain problems with real screenshots. Celebrate fixes that prevent whole classes of bugs. Localization goes faster and cheaper when engineering treats it as part of building the product rather than an afterthought.

How to measure localization quality

Track language bugs found before and after release, translator query volume, time from string freeze to localized build, and user feedback by market. Review samples with native speakers using an agreed checklist covering accuracy, terminology, style and layout. Use these numbers to prioritize fixes and show the business how localization supports growth.

How to plan a localization release

Set a string freeze date, send strings with context to translators, schedule in-context QA in every language and leave time for fixes. Coordinate store listings, help content and marketing so every market launches together.

How to start in localization without experience

Volunteer to translate or test open-source apps, run pseudo-localization on a small project of your own, and document the bugs you find and how you would fix them. A short portfolio of real localization QA reports often impresses hiring managers more than a list of courses.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Ignoring i18n basics.
  • QA in spreadsheets only.
  • Hard-coded formats.
  • No context for translators.
  • Forgetting RTL.

How we know

Customer language preferences come from CSA Research's 2020 survey; market size from the Nimdzi 100 (2025); i18n and l10n definitions from the W3C; and India pay from AmbitionBox (read October 2026; localization specialist figures are from a small sample). • Pseudo-localization — fake translations for testing.
  • TMS — translation management system.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between i18n and l10n?

Internationalization (i18n) is designing software so it can support many languages; localization (l10n) is adapting it for a specific language and market.

What does a localization specialist do?

Manages translation of software strings, coordinates translators, checks quality in context and solves layout and format issues.

Do I need to code for localization jobs?

Not always, but understanding strings, resource files, placeholders and how builds work helps a lot; localization engineers code more.

What is pseudo-localization?

Replacing text with longer, accented test strings to find layout and hard-coding problems before real translation.

Which tools are used?

Translation management systems, CAT tools, string resource files, design tools and screenshot-based QA.

Is this test a vendor certification?

No. It's a free skills credential for your CV.
