How to get an
application security job

To get an application security job in 2027, show you can help developers ship secure software: knowing the OWASP Top 10, reviewing code for access control, injection and authentication flaws, securing APIs, managing vulnerable dependencies, running SAST, DAST and secret scanning in CI/CD, threat modelling features and explaining fixes developers can act on. Exploited software vulnerabilities are now the top breach vector. Build examples and verify with a free 15-minute test.

Quick answer: How do I get into application security?

  1. Top breach vector — 31% of breaches start with exploited software vulnerabilities (Verizon DBIR 2026).
  2. OWASP Top 10 — the 2025 edition is the standard awareness list.
  3. APIs everywhere — 82% of organisations have adopted some API-first approach (Postman, 2025).
  4. Pay in India — application security engineers report ₹11.9–13.1 lakh (AmbitionBox).
  5. Proof — a free 15-minute application security test.

Key takeaways

  • Access control bugs are the most common.
  • Never trust user input.
  • Dependencies are your code too.
  • Automate checks in CI/CD.
  • Write fixes developers can use.

Picture a food delivery app's customer API. A user changes the order ID in a request from 10234 to 10235 and sees someone else's address and phone number. That's broken access control, and it's exactly the kind of flaw an application security engineer hunts for. After a bug bounty report exposes it, the company hires one. She adds object-level authorisation checks to a shared middleware, writes automated tests that try other users' IDs on every endpoint, adds dependency and secret scanning to CI, and runs short threat-modelling sessions for new features. Within a quarter, the bug bounty programme's findings shift from critical data leaks to minor issues.

At a glance: How do I get into application security?

What application security involves

Application security (AppSec) makes software resistant to attack throughout its lifecycle. The core skills are knowing common vulnerability classes — broken access control, injection, authentication and session flaws, insecure design, misconfiguration, vulnerable components, server-side request forgery and more; secure code review; securing APIs; threat modelling; running SAST, DAST, software composition analysis and secret scanning; integrating checks into CI/CD (DevSecOps); triaging findings; and coaching developers on fixes.

The OWASP Top 10 is the standard awareness list, with a 2025 edition now published.1 The stakes are rising: Verizon's 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report found exploited software vulnerabilities are now the top way attackers get in, at 31% of breaches.2 APIs are a major surface — Postman's 2025 report found 82% of organisations have adopted some level of API-first development.3 In India, AmbitionBox lists application security engineers at a typical ₹11.9–13.1 lakh.4 In the US, software QA analysts and testers — a related role — earn a $104,300 median (BLS, May 2025).5

Your CV

Show impact: "Added shared authorisation middleware and cross-user access tests; integrated SAST, SCA and secret scanning; critical bug bounty findings fell."

Interview questions, with how to answer them

"How do you prevent SQL injection?"

Parameterised queries, ORM safeguards, input validation and least-privilege database accounts.

"What's an IDOR?"

Insecure direct object reference — accessing others' data by changing an identifier; fix with per-object authorisation.

"How do you handle a flood of SAST findings?"

Tune rules, prioritise by exploitability and exposure, fix systemic causes and gate only high-confidence issues.

"How do you secure dependencies?"

Software composition analysis, pinned versions, update policies and SBOMs.

"How do you work with developers who push back?"

Show the risk with a proof of concept, offer a practical fix and agree timelines.

Questions to ask in your interview

  • "What's the developer-to-AppSec ratio?" — scale.
  • "Which checks run in CI?" — maturity.
  • "Is there a bug bounty programme?" — external testing.
  • "How are security champions used?" — culture.

More questions interviewers ask

"What's SSRF?"

Table: A first-90-days plan (editorial guidance)

Learn the architecture and existing findings first. Fix systemic causes — like missing authorisation middleware — rather than chasing individual bugs. Then build a champions network and lightweight threat modelling so security starts earlier.

How AI is changing application security

AI coding assistants now generate a large share of code, sometimes reproducing insecure patterns or inventing package names attackers can register. AppSec teams respond with stronger automated scanning, dependency verification and review of AI-generated code in sensitive areas. Applications that use large language models add new risks — prompt injection, data leakage, excessive agent permissions — which OWASP and others now document. AI also helps defenders triage findings and suggest fixes. In interviews, show you can secure both AI-written code and AI-powered features.

How to write a fix guide developers will use

Lead with the risk in one sentence and a realistic impact. Show the vulnerable code and the fixed code side by side in the team's language and framework. Explain how to test the fix, and point to a reusable library or pattern so the problem doesn't recur. Keep it short, specific and respectful — developers fix faster when the guidance feels like help, not blame.

Common myths about application security

"Scanners find everything." Logic flaws like broken access control often need human review and tests.

"Security is the security team's job." Developers write the code; AppSec scales by enabling them.

"Frameworks make apps secure." They help, but misuse and custom logic still create holes.

How to practise application security legally

Use applications built for practice. Intentionally vulnerable web apps and API labs let you explore injection, broken access control, authentication flaws and more without harming anyone. Run them locally or in containers, and work through them with an intercepting proxy to see how requests and responses change. Write up each vulnerability you find: what it is, how you found it, its impact and the fix in code.

Next, read real code. Pick an open-source project in a language you know and review authentication, authorisation and input handling. Try adding a security scanner and dependency checker to a small project of your own and see what they report. Many bug bounty platforms also publish disclosed reports, which show how real vulnerabilities were found and fixed. Only test live systems when you have explicit written permission or they're in a bug bounty programme's scope, and follow its rules. Employers value candidates who can show both offensive understanding and the developer empathy to explain fixes.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Reporting issues without fixes.
  • Ignoring access control.
  • Gating builds on noisy findings.
  • Forgetting dependencies and secrets.
  • Testing apps without permission.

How we know

Vulnerability categories come from OWASP; breach patterns from Verizon's 2026 DBIR; API adoption from Postman's 2025 report; US pay from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025); and India pay from AmbitionBox (read October 2026). The IDOR example, fix-guide advice and history are editorial. Science of Apps publishes the free test linked here. Last reviewed October 2026.

Key terms, defined

  • SAST / DAST — static and dynamic security testing.
  • IDOR — insecure direct object reference.
  • SCA — software composition analysis of dependencies.
  • DevSecOps — security integrated into development and operations.

Frequently asked questions

What does an application security engineer do?

They help teams build secure software — threat modelling, secure code review, security testing (SAST, DAST, dependency and secret scanning), guiding fixes, training developers and building security into CI/CD.

What is the OWASP Top 10?

A widely used awareness document from OWASP listing the most critical web application security risks, updated periodically; the latest edition is 2025.

SAST vs DAST?

Static application security testing analyses source code without running it; dynamic testing probes a running application from the outside.

Do I need to be a developer for AppSec?

Strong coding ability helps greatly — you need to read code, understand frameworks and suggest practical fixes.

How much do AppSec engineers earn in India?

AmbitionBox lists application security engineers at a typical ₹11.9–13.1 lakh and penetration testers at ₹9.8–10.8 lakh (October 2026).

What is DevSecOps?

Integrating security practices and automated checks throughout development and deployment, rather than only at the end.
