AWS skills employers
want for cloud jobs

Employers hiring for AWS roles in 2027 expect the fundamentals: core services such as EC2, S3, VPC, IAM, RDS and Lambda; regions and availability zones; the shared responsibility model; secure, least-privilege access; monitoring; and how AWS pricing works. AWS is the most used cloud among developers. Build small projects on the free tier, keep costs and permissions under control, and verify your basics with Science of Apps' independent 10-minute test.

Quick answer: What AWS skills do I need for a cloud job?

  1. Most used cloud — 43.3% of developers use AWS (Stack Overflow 2025).
  2. Shared responsibility — AWS secures the cloud; you secure what's in it (AWS).
  3. Core services — EC2, S3, VPC, IAM, RDS, Lambda, CloudWatch.
  4. Pay in India — AWS cloud engineers report ₹7.6–8.3 lakh (AmbitionBox).
  5. Proof — a free, independent 10-minute AWS fundamentals test.

Key takeaways

  • Learn IAM before anything else.
  • Design across availability zones.
  • Block public S3 access by default.
  • Watch costs with budgets and tags.
  • Automate with the CLI and code.

Picture a fresher interviewing for an AWS cloud engineer role at an IT services company. Asked to describe a project, the first candidate lists twenty AWS services they've "worked with". The second shows one small project in detail: a web app on EC2 instances in two availability zones behind a load balancer, static assets in S3 with public access blocked and served through CloudFront, a managed RDS database in private subnets, IAM roles instead of access keys, CloudWatch alarms, and a budget alert that fired once when she forgot to stop an instance. She explains each choice and what she'd change at larger scale. She gets the offer, because depth on the fundamentals beats a long list of service names.

At a glance: What AWS skills do I need for a cloud job?

What AWS fundamentals cover

AWS fundamentals are the core services and concepts most AWS jobs use daily: global infrastructure (regions, availability zones, edge locations); compute (EC2, Auto Scaling, Lambda, containers); storage (S3, EBS, EFS); databases (RDS, DynamoDB); networking (VPC, subnets, security groups, load balancers, Route 53, CloudFront); identity (IAM users, roles, policies); monitoring (CloudWatch, CloudTrail); and pricing and cost management. AWS's own overview of cloud computing explains the on-demand, pay-as-you-go model behind all of these.1

Security begins with the shared responsibility model: AWS secures the cloud, and customers secure what they put in it.2 AWS is the most widely used cloud among developers, at 43.3% in Stack Overflow's 2025 survey.3 Costs matter too; the State of FinOps 2026 report shows cloud cost management expanding, with 98% of teams now managing AI spend.4 In India, AmbitionBox lists AWS cloud engineers at a typical ₹7.6–8.3 lakh.5

Your CV

Show depth: "Built and documented a two-AZ web app on AWS with EC2 Auto Scaling, RDS, S3 and CloudFront; IAM roles only; budget and CloudWatch alarms; deployed with Terraform."

Interview questions, with how to answer them

"EC2 vs Lambda — when to use each?"

EC2 for long-running or custom workloads; Lambda for event-driven, short tasks without managing servers.

"How do you secure an S3 bucket?"

Block public access, least-privilege bucket policies, encryption and access logging.

"What's a security group?"

A stateful virtual firewall for resources like EC2 instances.

"How do you make an app highly available on AWS?"

Multiple AZs, load balancing, Auto Scaling, Multi-AZ databases and health checks.

"Why use IAM roles instead of access keys?"

Roles give temporary credentials that are harder to leak and easier to manage.

Questions to ask in your interview

  • "How many AWS accounts and how are they organised?" — scale.
  • "Is infrastructure in code?" — maturity.
  • "How are costs reviewed?" — FinOps culture.

How AI is changing AWS work

AWS now offers managed AI services and GPU capacity, and many teams are building AI features on them, which adds new cost and security considerations. AI assistants help engineers write infrastructure code, explain IAM policies and troubleshoot errors faster. Their output can include over-broad permissions or costly configurations, so review suggestions carefully. Engineers who understand AWS fundamentals deeply can use AI assistance safely and productively.

How to avoid common AWS beginner mistakes

Never use the root account for daily work; enable MFA on it and lock it away. Set a budget alert before launching anything. Don't commit access keys to code — use roles. Keep S3 public access blocked unless you deliberately need public content, and even then serve it through a CDN. Don't open SSH to the whole internet; use Session Manager or restrict IPs. Stop or delete resources after experiments. These habits prevent most of the incidents and surprise bills new AWS users face.

How to present an AWS project

Show an architecture diagram, explain why you chose each service, list the security controls and cost estimates, and share what went wrong and how you fixed it. Link to the code. Interviewers care more about your reasoning than about how many services you used.

Common myths about AWS careers

"You must know every AWS service." Depth in core services matters far more.

"Certification alone gets jobs." Projects and reasoning win interviews.

"The free tier is completely free." Some usage costs money; set budgets.

How AWS networking fits together

A VPC is your private network in an AWS region, with an address range you choose. Inside it, subnets live in specific availability zones. Public subnets have a route to an internet gateway, so resources there can be reached from the internet if their security settings allow it. Private subnets have no direct internet route; resources there reach the internet, when needed, through a NAT gateway. A common pattern puts load balancers in public subnets and application servers and databases in private ones.

Security groups act as stateful firewalls attached to resources such as EC2 instances and databases. You allow specific inbound traffic — for example, HTTPS from the load balancer — and responses are allowed automatically. Network ACLs are stateless rules at the subnet level, used less often for fine-grained control. Route tables decide where traffic goes, and VPC endpoints let resources reach AWS services like S3 privately without crossing the internet.

Understanding these pieces lets you design secure, resilient architectures and troubleshoot connectivity. When an instance can't be reached, check the security group, the subnet's route table, network ACLs and whether the instance has a public address or sits behind a load balancer.

How to think about AWS costs

Compute, storage, databases and data transfer all cost money, and costs grow quietly. Tag resources, set budgets, stop development instances when not needed, choose appropriately sized instance types and use storage classes for older data. Review Cost Explorer monthly to understand trends. Interviewers increasingly ask about cost, so be ready to explain how you'd keep a project affordable.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Using the root account.
  • Public S3 buckets.
  • Hard-coded access keys.
  • Single-AZ designs.
  • No budget alerts.
