Generative engine optimization
skills for 2027

Generative engine optimization in 2027 is getting a brand accurately mentioned and cited when people ask AI assistants: understanding how they retrieve and summarise sources, publishing quotable facts and original data, earning mentions on trusted sites, deciding crawler access deliberately and tracking how assistants describe you. Run a tracked GEO project and verify your skills with a free test.

Quick answer: What is generative engine optimization and how do you do it?

  1. Research-backed — adding citations, quotes and statistics improved AI-answer visibility by up to 40% (GEO paper, 2023).
  2. Clicks shrinking — top results lost ~34.5% of clicks when AI Overviews appeared (Ahrefs, 2025).
  3. Accuracy problem — 31% of AI news answers had serious sourcing issues (EBU/BBC, 2025).
  4. What's tested — source selection, quotable content, authority, crawler access, tracking.
  5. Proof — a tracked set of prompts where your brand's citations improved.

Key takeaways

  • Generative engines retrieve sources, then summarise — be the source worth retrieving.
  • Quotable facts, original data and clear claims get cited.
  • Mentions on trusted third-party sites shape how assistants describe brands.
  • Decide deliberately which AI crawlers can access your content.
  • Track prompts and citations over time; results vary run to run.

Picture a Bengaluru HR software company that notices something odd. When prospects ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for "best payroll software for Indian startups", the answers name three competitors and never mention them, even though they rank well in Google. A GEO-minded content lead investigates. The assistants cite comparison articles on two well-known business sites, a popular Reddit thread and a government compliance page. The company appears on none of them, and its own pages bury key facts — supported states, statutory compliance, pricing — in marketing copy. She publishes a clear facts page and an original survey on payroll errors in startups. She pitches the data to the business publications that assistants cite, and answers questions in relevant communities transparently. Three months later the brand appears in most tracked answers, described accurately. That's generative engine optimization.

What GEO is

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is improving how often, and how accurately, AI assistants and AI search mention and cite a brand or its content. Systems such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews typically retrieve web sources and generate an answer from them. GEO makes your content easy to retrieve and quote, and gets your brand mentioned by the sources these systems trust.

The term comes from a 2023 research paper, which found that methods like adding citations, quotations from relevant sources and statistics improved content's visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%.1 The stakes are rising as answers replace clicks: Ahrefs found AI Overviews cut clicks to the top-ranking page by about 34.5%, and by 58% in a later update.2 Accuracy is a real concern too: the 2025 EBU/BBC study found 31% of AI assistants' news answers had serious sourcing problems,3 which makes clear, well-sourced brand information more important. Google says its AI features rely on the same fundamentals as search,5 and AI companies document their crawlers so publishers can control access.4

The skills that matter

Understanding retrieval

How assistants search, select and summarise sources — and how that varies by tool.

Quotable content

Clear claims, definitions, numbers and comparisons in plain language with sources.

Original data

Surveys and research that others cite, making you the primary source.

Mentions and authority

Coverage on trusted publications, review sites and communities assistants draw from.

Crawler access

Deliberate robots.txt choices for search and AI crawlers.

Measurement

Fixed prompt sets tracked over time across assistants, with accuracy checks.

Run the same prompts regularly, because answers vary between runs and tools. The "sources cited" column tells you where to earn mentions and which outdated pages to get corrected.

Interview questions, with how to answer them

"How do AI assistants decide what to say about a brand?"

From training data and, increasingly, retrieved web sources at answer time — so trusted third-party mentions and clear owned content both matter.

"What content gets cited?"

Specific, verifiable facts, original data, clear definitions and comparisons from credible sources.

"Should we block AI crawlers?"

Weigh content protection against visibility; decide per crawler and purpose, and document it.

"How do you measure GEO when answers vary?"

Fixed prompts, repeated runs, several assistants, trends over time — not one-off screenshots.

"An assistant gives wrong information about us. What do you do?"

Find the sources it relies on, correct or update them, publish clear facts, and use platform feedback channels.

Table: A first-90-days plan (editorial guidance)

GEO is new enough that many teams don't yet know how AI assistants describe them. Your first contribution is a reliable baseline: a fixed set of prompts that matter commercially, run across several assistants, recording mentions, citations, accuracy and the sources each answer relies on. That source list becomes your roadmap — owned pages to fix, data to publish, publications to pitch, outdated pages to get corrected. Report trends rather than screenshots, because answers vary from run to run. Specialists who bring this discipline quickly become the person leadership asks about AI search.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Treating GEO as keyword stuffing for AI.
  • One-off screenshots as evidence.
  • Ignoring third-party sources.
  • Blocking crawlers without a decision.
  • Promising guaranteed placement.

How we know

The GEO concept and visibility findings come from Aggarwal et al.'s 2023 paper; click effects from Ahrefs; AI answer accuracy from the 2025 EBU/BBC study via Journalism.co.uk; crawler documentation from OpenAI; AI features guidance from Google Search Central; and India pay from AmbitionBox (read October 2026). Key terms, defined

  • GEO — generative engine optimization.
  • Generative engine — an AI system that answers by generating text, often from retrieved sources.
  • Citation — a linked or named source in an AI answer.
  • Prompt panel — a fixed set of questions tracked across assistants.
  • AI crawler — a bot that collects web content for AI training or retrieval.

Frequently asked questions

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

GEO is improving the likelihood that AI assistants and AI search — such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Overviews — mention, cite and accurately describe your brand or content when people ask relevant questions.

How do AI assistants choose which sources to cite?

Many retrieve web pages through a search step, then generate an answer from them. Content that's relevant, clear, authoritative, accessible to their crawlers and easy to quote is more likely to be used. Training data also shapes what models 'know' about brands.

Is GEO different from SEO?

It builds on SEO — crawlability, quality and authority still matter — but focuses on being cited and described accurately in generated answers, which depends heavily on third-party mentions and quotable facts.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

Organic AI answers can't be bought in the way search ads are. Some AI platforms are introducing ad formats, but GEO refers to earning organic mentions and citations.

Should I block AI crawlers?

It's a business decision. Blocking some crawlers protects content from training use but may reduce visibility in AI answers. AI companies document their crawlers so site owners can choose deliberately in robots.txt.

How do you measure GEO?

Track a fixed set of prompts across assistants over time — whether your brand is mentioned, cited, linked and described accurately — plus referral traffic from AI tools and branded search.
