How to become a
sales development rep

To become a B2B sales development representative (SDR) in 2027, show you can create qualified pipeline: understanding the ideal customer profile, researching accounts, writing relevant outreach across email, phone and LinkedIn, handling early objections, booking meetings and handing them over cleanly to account executives — while respecting consent and email rules. It's the most common entry into B2B sales. Practise real outreach and verify your skills with a free 10-minute test.

Quick answer: How do I become an SDR?

  1. Pay in India — SDRs report ₹8.2–9.1 lakh, up 16% (AmbitionBox).
  2. Email rules — Gmail requires one-click unsubscribe for senders of 5,000+ messages a day.
  3. Path — SDR → account executive is a common B2B sales route.
  4. Inside sales — inside sales executives report ₹4.4–4.8 lakh (AmbitionBox).
  5. Proof — a free 10-minute B2B SDR test.

Key takeaways

  • Know exactly who to target.
  • Research before you reach out.
  • Short, relevant messages win.
  • Book meetings, not just conversations.
  • Hand off with full context.

Picture two SDRs at a SaaS company selling to Indian manufacturers. The first sends 200 identical emails a day: "Hi {first_name}, we help companies grow." Replies are rare and unsubscribes are rising. The second picks 25 accounts a week that match the ideal customer profile, reads each company's recent news and finds a trigger, such as a new plant opening. Then she writes a three-line email to the operations head referencing it, follows up with a short call and connects on LinkedIn with a useful plant-scheduling checklist. She books eight qualified meetings a week, more than the first SDR, and account executives fight to work with her.

What SDRs do

Sales development representatives (SDRs), sometimes called BDRs, generate the pipeline that account executives close. The work includes understanding the ideal customer profile (ICP) and buyer personas, building account and contact lists, researching triggers and pain points, writing outreach sequences across email, phone, LinkedIn and sometimes WhatsApp where consent exists, making cold calls, handling early objections, qualifying interest, booking meetings, handing over to account executives with notes, and logging everything in the CRM.

Outreach has rules. Gmail's sender guidelines ask senders to email only people who want to hear from them and require one-click unsubscribe for those sending more than 5,000 messages a day,1 and many countries have anti-spam and privacy laws. Relevance and permission matter more than volume. The role pays well for an entry job: AmbitionBox lists SDRs in India at a typical ₹8.2–9.1 lakh, up 16% in two years,2 compared with ₹4.4–4.8 lakh for inside sales executives.3 Good SDRs also set up healthy customer relationships — keeping customers is far cheaper than winning new ones, as HBR notes.4 In the US, sales managers, a common long-term destination, earn a $148,270 median (BLS).5

Be respectful, explain the reason briefly and ask for the right person or best time.

"What's an ICP?"

The ideal customer profile — the type of company most likely to buy and succeed.

Days 31–60Consistent sequencesSteady meeting rate

Table: A first-90-days plan (editorial guidance)

Learn the ICP and listen to top SDRs' calls. Build a daily routine of research, outreach and follow-up. By the third month, focus on quality — meetings that turn into real opportunities.

How AI is changing the SDR role

AI tools now research accounts, suggest triggers, draft emails and summarise calls, and some companies use AI agents for first-touch outreach. This has flooded inboxes with generic messages, so buyers ignore more of them and email providers enforce stricter rules. SDRs who stand out use AI to prepare faster but write genuinely relevant messages, make real calls and build trust. The role is shifting from volume to precision.

How to protect email deliverability

Send from a properly authenticated domain, warm up new domains gradually, keep lists accurate and relevant, include a clear unsubscribe and honour it promptly. Watch bounce and spam complaint rates, and pause campaigns that perform badly. Deliverability problems can silence a whole sales team, so good habits protect everyone.

Common myths about SDR jobs

"It's just cold calling." Research, writing and qualification matter as much.

"More emails mean more meetings." Relevance beats volume.

"SDR is a dead-end." It's a common path to account executive and beyond.

How to structure a cold call

Cold calls feel less scary with a simple structure. Open with your name, company and a reason for calling that relates to them: "I noticed you're hiring three new support agents — I work with support teams on onboarding new hires faster." Ask permission to take thirty seconds to explain why you called. Most people say yes when asked politely.

Then ask one or two short questions about their situation rather than launching into a pitch: "How long does it usually take a new agent to handle tickets alone?" Listen to the answer and connect it to a specific result you've seen with similar teams, without inventing statistics. If there's interest, ask for a short meeting with a specific time. If not, ask whether someone else handles this or whether a later date would be better.

Handle objections with curiosity rather than argument. "We already have a tool" can lead to "What do you like about it, and what would you change?" Record outcomes and notes in the CRM immediately after each call. Over time, your notes show which openers and questions work best, and that evidence is what managers look for when promoting SDRs to account executive roles.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Generic templates.
  • Ignoring opt-outs.
  • Booking unqualified meetings.
  • Poor handoff notes.
  • Messy CRM records.

Frequently asked questions

What does an SDR do?

A sales development representative finds and engages potential customers, qualifies interest and books meetings for account executives, using phone, email, LinkedIn and other channels.

SDR vs BDR?

Often used interchangeably. Some companies use SDR for inbound leads and BDR for outbound prospecting.

How much do SDRs earn in India?

AmbitionBox lists sales development representatives at a typical ₹8.2–9.1 lakh, up 16% in two years (October 2026), often with variable pay.

What metrics are SDRs measured on?

Meetings booked and held, qualified opportunities created, pipeline value, and activity like calls and emails — with quality mattering more than volume.

Are there rules for cold email?

Yes. Follow anti-spam laws and provider rules — Gmail, for example, requires bulk senders to support one-click unsubscribe — and respect people who opt out.

What comes after the SDR role?

Usually account executive, but also customer success, marketing or sales operations.
