International SEO skills
employers want

Employers in 2027 want international SEO specialists who can take a site into new countries and languages without wasting effort: choosing between country domains, subdomains and subfolders, implementing hreflang correctly, localising rather than just translating, researching keywords per market and language, and launching and measuring each market. Indian-language search is a growing opportunity. Plan one market launch end to end and verify your skills with a free test.

Quick answer: What international SEO skills do global companies want?

  1. Hreflang — tells Google which language or regional version to show; errors are very common.
  2. Structure — country domains, subdomains or subfolders each have trade-offs.
  3. Localisation — people search differently in each market, not just in another language.
  4. India — 1.03 billion internet users by end-2025, many searching in Indian languages.
  5. Proof — a market launch plan with hreflang validated and results tracked.

Key takeaways

  • Choose site structure for the business, not by habit.
  • Hreflang must be reciprocal, valid and consistent with canonicals.
  • Translate intent, not just words — research keywords per market.
  • Don't auto-redirect by IP; let users and crawlers reach every version.
  • Measure each market separately.

Picture a Bengaluru SaaS company launching in the UK, Germany and the UAE. Its first attempt translates every page into German with a machine tool. It points every hreflang tag at the home page and automatically redirects visitors by IP address. Six months later, German traffic is negligible and UK visitors keep landing on the Indian pricing page. A new international SEO specialist starts again. She uses one domain with subfolders (/en-gb/, /de-de/, /ar-ae/), sets hreflang annotations so each version references the others, and has native speakers localise the product pages. German keywords are researched from scratch, because Germans search for different terms than a translation suggests. A banner suggests the local version instead of forcing a redirect. The second launch works, and the company repeats her playbook for two more markets.

What international SEO involves

International SEO is helping search engines show the right language or regional version of a site to the right people, and making each version worth ranking. It covers choosing site structure (country-code domains, subdomains or subfolders), implementing hreflang, localising content and keywords, technical set-up such as canonicals and sitemaps per version, and launching and measuring markets.

Google's documentation explains both the hreflang method — every version listing all equivalents, including itself, with valid language and region codes1 — and the trade-offs of each site structure, along with its advice against forced locale-adaptive redirects.2 It also applies the same quality expectations to every language: pages should be helpful and reliable for their readers.4 For Indian companies, the opportunity runs both ways — going abroad and going deeper at home. DataReportal counted about 1.03 billion internet users in India by the end of 2025,3 many of whom prefer content in Indian languages.

The skills that matter

Site structure

ccTLDs, subdomains or subfolders chosen for authority, cost, legal and team needs.

Hreflang

Reciprocal, valid annotations consistent with canonicals, plus x-default.

Localisation

Prices, currency, examples, regulations and tone adapted — not just translated.

Market keyword research

Local search terms, intent and competitors researched per market.

Technical consistency

Per-version sitemaps, canonicals, crawlable switchers, no forced redirects.

Measurement by market

Search Console properties or filters, analytics segments and local KPIs.

Worked example: hreflang set for one page

<link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-in" href="https://example.com/en-in/pricing/" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-gb" href="https://example.com/en-gb/pricing/" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="de-de" href="https://example.com/de-de/preise/" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="hi-in" href="https://example.com/hi-in/pricing/" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://example.com/pricing/" />

Every version carries the same set, including a reference to itself; each page's canonical points to itself, not to the English version. Mismatches between hreflang and canonicals are among the most common causes of the wrong version ranking.

Interview questions, with how to answer them

"Which structure would you choose?"

Depends on markets, budget, legal needs and teams; subfolders are usually easiest to grow, ccTLDs strongest for country signal.

"What are common hreflang mistakes?"

Missing return links, wrong codes, pointing to redirects or non-canonical URLs, and mismatches with canonicals.

"How do you handle English for several countries?"

Separate versions only where content genuinely differs — prices, laws, spelling — with hreflang for each region.

"Should we auto-redirect by IP?"

No. Suggest the local version and let users and crawlers access all versions.

"How would you approach Hindi or Tamil content?"

Research how people actually search (often mixing scripts and English terms), localise properly and measure separately.

Days 1–30Audit structure, hreflang, canonicals and market dataA clear map of errors and opportunities
Days 31–60Fix hreflang; localise top pages for one marketCorrect versions ranking
Days 61–90Repeatable launch playbook and market reportingMeasured growth in target markets

Table: A first-90-days plan (editorial guidance)

Most international SEO problems are visible within days of looking: wrong versions ranking, missing return links, canonicals pointing to the wrong language. Start by fixing those, because they block every market at once. Then prove the approach in one priority market with properly localised pages and keyword research done in that language, not translated from English. Document what you did as a playbook — structure, hreflang, localisation checklist, launch steps and KPIs — so the next market goes faster. Specialists who turn international SEO into a repeatable process become central to a company's expansion plans.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Translating keywords literally.
  • Hreflang without return links.
  • Canonicals to the English version.
  • Forced IP redirects.
  • One report for all markets.

How we know

Hreflang and multi-regional guidance comes from Google Search Central; India's internet users from DataReportal's Digital 2026 India report; content quality expectations from Google's helpful-content guidance; and India pay from AmbitionBox (read October 2026). Key terms, defined

  • Hreflang — annotation linking language or regional versions of a page.
  • ccTLD — country-code top-level domain, such as .de or .in.
  • x-default — the hreflang value for a fallback version.
  • Localisation — adapting content to a market's language, culture and needs.
  • Locale-adaptive redirect — automatically sending users to a version based on location or language.

Frequently asked questions

What is international SEO?

International SEO is optimising a website so search engines show the right language or country version to the right users. It covers site structure, hreflang, localised content and keyword research, technical set-up and measurement by market.

What is hreflang?

Hreflang is an annotation (in HTML, HTTP headers or sitemaps) telling Google which pages are equivalents in different languages or regions. Each version must reference all others, including itself, and use valid language and region codes.

Country domains, subdomains or subfolders?

Country-code domains send a strong country signal but cost more to build authority for; subfolders share one domain's authority and are easier to manage; subdomains sit in between. Google's documentation sets out the pros and cons.

Is machine translation good enough for SEO?

It can be a starting point, but pages need human review for accuracy, tone and local search terms. Thin or poor-quality translated pages can fail to rank or hurt user trust.

Should I redirect users based on their location?

Avoid forced automatic redirects. Google may not crawl all versions, and users may want another one. Suggest the local version with a banner and let people choose.

Who hires international SEO specialists?

Global brands, SaaS companies expanding abroad, travel and e-commerce companies, Indian companies launching in Indian languages or overseas, and agencies serving them.
