SEO audit skills
employers want

Employers in 2027 want SEO managers and consultants who can diagnose problems fast and write audits teams actually act on: separating ranking losses from SERP and AI-summary changes, checking indexing, technical health, content quality and links, matching drops to updates or releases, and prioritising fixes by impact and effort. A tool's issue list isn't an audit. Audit a real site, explain one traffic drop with evidence, and verify your skills with a free test.

Quick answer: What SEO auditing and troubleshooting skills do employers want?

  1. Not every drop is a ranking loss — AI Overviews cut top-result clicks ~34.5% (Ahrefs, 2025).
  2. Updates matter — Google's March 2024 update cut low-quality content in results by 45%.
  3. What's tested — diagnosis, evidence, prioritisation and clear reporting.
  4. Pay in India — SEO managers typically earn ₹9.7–10.7 lakh (AmbitionBox, Oct 2026).
  5. Proof — an audit with prioritised fixes and the results after they shipped.

Key takeaways

  • Start with the question: what changed, where, and since when?
  • Separate demand, SERP, ranking and tracking causes before fixing anything.
  • Prioritise by business impact and effort — not by tool severity labels.
  • Write audits for the people who must act on them.
  • Verify fixes worked; audits are a loop, not a document.

Picture an SEO consultant called in after a news site lost 40% of its Google traffic in a month. The previous agency sent a 90-page crawler export flagging 12,000 "issues" — missing alt text, long titles, duplicate meta descriptions. Nothing improved. The new consultant spends a day on the questions first. When exactly did the drop start? Which sections and queries? Did impressions fall, or only clicks? The drop began the same week as a CMS migration. Impressions fell only for article pages, and the indexing report showed thousands of articles excluded as "Alternate page with proper canonical tag". A template bug had pointed every article's canonical to its category page. Her audit is three pages long, with one urgent fix, two supporting ones and a verification plan. Traffic recovers within weeks.

What SEO auditing involves

SEO auditing is reviewing a site's search performance and health and turning findings into a prioritised plan. Troubleshooting is diagnosing a specific problem — usually a traffic drop — from evidence. Both cover technical health, indexing, content quality, links, search features and measurement, and both end with action.

The causes of drops have multiplied. Some are on the site: migrations, template bugs, robots rules, canonicals — exactly what Search Console's page indexing report is built to reveal.3 Some are algorithmic: Google says its March 2024 core update and new spam policies reduced low-quality, unoriginal content in results by 45%.25 And some aren't ranking losses at all: Ahrefs found that when AI Overviews appear, the top-ranking page receives about 34.5% fewer clicks, rising to 58% in a later update.1 Google's own guide to debugging traffic drops groups the usual suspects in the same way — technical problems, security and spam issues, algorithm updates, changes in search interest and site moves.4

Interview questions, with how to answer them

"Traffic dropped. What do you check first?"

Whether it's real (tracking, seasonality), then where it happened and whether impressions or just clicks fell.

"How do you prioritise audit findings?"

By business impact, confidence and effort; most sites need a few big fixes, not hundreds of small ones.

"How do you know if a Google update hit you?"

Timing that matches the update, broad drops in specific content types, and no technical cause — then review quality against the guidance.

"What goes in a migration audit?"

URL mapping and redirects, canonical and hreflang checks, crawl comparisons, staging tests and post-launch monitoring.

"How do you present an audit to executives?"

Problem, cause, impact in revenue terms, top three actions, owners and timeline.

  • Diagnosis — answering "why did this change?"
  • Prioritisation meetings — with product and engineering.
  • Verification — confirming fixes worked.

Your first 90 days in an audit-heavy SEO role

PeriodFocusWhat good looks like
Days 1–30Baseline: indexing, performance by section, history of dropsA shared, trusted picture of site health
Days 31–60Deliver a short audit; ship top fixesMeasurable recovery or growth
Days 61–90Pre-release checks and monitoringFewer regressions, faster diagnosis

Table: A first-90-days plan (editorial guidance)

Auditors build credibility by being right and being brief. In the first month, build a baseline: how each section performs, what the indexing report shows, and when past drops happened and why. Then deliver an audit of a few pages, not a hundred, focusing on the handful of issues that matter most, with evidence and owners. Follow up until fixes ship and verify the results. Finally, move from cure to prevention: agree checks for releases and migrations and set alerts for sudden changes. SEOs who prevent problems rather than just report them are the ones trusted to lead SEO functions.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Crawler exports as audits.
  • Fixing before diagnosing.
  • Blaming every drop on Google.
  • No business impact.
  • No verification after fixes.

Frequently asked questions

What is an SEO audit?

An SEO audit is a structured review of a site's search performance and health — technical, content, links and search features — that ends in a prioritised plan of fixes tied to business impact.

How do you diagnose a traffic drop?

Confirm it's real (tracking, seasonality), find where it happened (pages, queries, devices, countries), compare impressions vs clicks vs positions, then check timing against releases, Google updates and SERP changes such as AI summaries, before choosing fixes.

How often should a site be audited?

A full audit once or twice a year, lighter monthly health checks, and targeted audits before and after migrations, redesigns or major releases.

What tools do SEO auditors use?

Google Search Console, analytics, a site crawler, log analysis, page speed tools, backlink tools and the search results themselves. Tools find symptoms; the auditor works out causes and priorities.

What makes an SEO audit useful?

A short executive summary, a few high-impact priorities with evidence, clear owners and effort estimates, and a way to verify success. Long lists of low-impact warnings get ignored.

Who needs SEO audit skills?

SEO managers, technical SEO specialists, consultants, agency strategists and heads of SEO — anyone responsible for explaining performance and choosing what to fix.
