How to get
an SEO job

To get an SEO job in 2027, show you understand how search works now — crawling, indexing, ranking and AI summaries that answer many queries without a click — and that you can grow organic results anyway: matching search intent, writing genuinely helpful pages, fixing technical basics and earning links and mentions. Employers want a site you grew, with Search Console data. Build one and verify your fundamentals with a free test.

Quick answer: How do I get a job in SEO?

  1. Zero-click — 58.5% of US Google searches ended without a click in 2024 (SparkToro/Datos).
  2. AI summaries — top results lost about 34.5% of clicks when an AI Overview appeared (Ahrefs, 2025).
  3. Quality bar — Google's March 2024 update cut low-quality, unoriginal content in results by 45%.
  4. Pay in India — SEO executives ₹2.6–2.8 lakh; SEO managers ₹9.7–10.7 lakh (AmbitionBox).
  5. Proof — a site you grew, with Search Console before-and-after data.

Key takeaways

  • SEO isn't dead; it's harder and more about genuine usefulness and brand.
  • Search intent is the core skill — match what the searcher actually wants.
  • Technical basics still decide whether pages can rank at all.
  • AI summaries change which queries are worth targeting.
  • Evidence from a real site beats any course certificate.

Picture an SEO interview at a travel company. The question: "Our organic traffic to destination guides fell 30% this year. What happened?" One candidate blames an algorithm update and suggests more blog posts. Another opens Search Console in her head. Impressions are flat but clicks fell, so the pages still rank and fewer people click. She checks the affected queries, which are "best time to visit X" questions now answered by AI summaries. Bookings from organic traffic, though, barely moved. She proposes shifting effort to queries where people want depth and to book — itineraries, prices, comparisons — plus original photos and local expertise, and tracking whether the brand is cited in AI answers. That's an SEO who understands 2027.

What SEO work is now

Search engine optimization is improving a website's visibility in search results so the right people find it. That means making sure search engines can crawl and index the pages, matching content to what searchers want, earning trust and links, and increasingly being cited in AI-generated answers. Google's own documentation describes the three stages every SEO must know: crawling, indexing and serving results.5

The job has changed a lot. SparkToro's 2024 study of Datos clickstream data found 58.5% of US Google searches ended without a click.1 Ahrefs found that when an AI Overview appeared, the top-ranking page received about 34.5% fewer clicks in its 2025 study, and a later update on December 2025 data put the drop at 58%.2 Google's March 2024 core update, with new spam policies against scaled content and site reputation abuse, reduced low-quality, unoriginal content in results by 45%, according to Google.3 The SEOs who thrive build pages that are genuinely the best answer.4

SEO interview questions, with how to answer them

"Is SEO dead because of AI?"

No — it's changed. Fewer clicks on simple questions, more value in depth, trust, brand and conversion-focused queries.

"How do you choose keywords?"

Intent and business value first, then volume and difficulty.

"What's the difference between crawling and indexing?"

Crawling is discovering pages; indexing is storing and understanding them so they can be shown in results.

Create useful resources, original data and digital PR worth citing — not buying links.

"What would you do in your first month?"

Audit technical health, review Search Console data, map keywords to pages and fix the highest-impact issues.

SEO results take time, so the first quarter is about building trust through clear diagnosis and quick, safe wins. Start by understanding which pages actually drive business results, not just traffic. Fix what blocks search engines — indexing errors, duplicate pages, slow templates — because those fixes often pay off fastest. Then improve titles and content on pages that already rank on page two, where small changes move the needle. Finally, agree a reporting rhythm that shows clicks, conversions and, increasingly, whether the brand appears in AI answers. SEOs who communicate this way earn patience from leadership for the longer-term content work that follows.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • "SEO is just keywords."
  • Mass-produced AI pages.
  • Ignoring Search Console.
  • Buying links.
  • Reporting traffic, not business results.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO still a good career in 2027?

Yes, but the job has changed. AI summaries answer many simple questions directly, and Google has tightened quality standards. SEOs who build genuinely useful content, fix technical issues, strengthen brands and optimise for AI search visibility remain in demand.

What does an SEO executive do?

Keyword research, optimising pages (titles, headings, content, internal links), checking technical issues in Search Console, supporting content creation, building links and mentions, and reporting on rankings and organic traffic.

How much do SEO professionals earn in India?

AmbitionBox lists SEO executives at a typical ₹2.6–2.8 lakh, SEO specialists at ₹5.3–5.8 lakh and SEO managers at ₹9.7–10.7 lakh a year (October 2026). Pay rises with technical skills and ownership of results.

How long does SEO take to work?

Technical fixes can show within weeks; new content often takes months to reach its potential, depending on competition and the site's authority. Set expectations with clients and managers accordingly.

Do I need coding skills for SEO?

Not for entry roles, but HTML basics help everyone, and technical SEO roles need comfort with how websites are built, rendered and served.

How do I build an SEO portfolio?

Start a niche site or help a small business. Do keyword research, publish helpful pages, fix technical issues and track results in Google Search Console. Document what you did and what changed.
