Apple developer account fee
in India — and is it worth it?

The Apple Developer Program costs US$99 a year — roughly ₹8,500 at current exchange rates, charged in local currency where available — and you need it to publish on the App Store. It is worth paying when your users skew towards higher spending, premium or international audiences, because iPhones are only about 6% of India's mobile web traffic but tend to over-represent paying customers.

Quick answer: How much is the Apple developer account fee in India, and is it worth it?

  1. Fee — US$99 a year (about ₹8,500), in local currency where available; Enterprise is US$299.
  2. Waiver — available to eligible nonprofits, accredited educational institutions and government entities.
  3. You get — App Store publishing, TestFlight, advanced capabilities and App Store Connect analytics.
  4. Worth it? — yes if your audience includes paying, premium or international users; Android-first is fine to start in India.

Key takeaways

  • The fee is annual: if it lapses, your apps are removed from sale until you renew.
  • You can build and test on your own iPhone with a free Apple Account; you pay only to distribute.
  • In India, Android carries about 94% of mobile web traffic and iOS about 6% — but iPhone users often matter more for subscriptions and premium products.
  • For most Indian consumer apps, launching Android-first and adding iOS once the product works is a sound plan.
  • Commission on digital sales (15% or 30%) is a bigger cost than the membership for any app that sells subscriptions.

For an Indian founder, Apple's developer fee arrives as a small puzzle. It is not a lot of money, but it recurs every year, it is priced in dollars, and it buys access to a platform that carries a small share of Indian phones. Is it worth it? The honest answer depends less on the fee than on who your users are.

Is iOS worth it for an Indian app?

Start with the numbers. In India, Android accounts for about 94% of mobile web traffic and iOS about 6%, according to StatCounter4. On reach alone, Android wins overwhelmingly.

But reach is not revenue. iPhone owners in India tend to skew towards higher incomes, metros and premium spending, and are typically over-represented among people who pay for subscriptions and in-app purchases. If your model depends on paying users, that 6% can be a much larger slice of your revenue.

Is iOS worth it for an Indian app?

iOS is worth it when…

You sell subscriptions or premium features, target professionals or affluent users, serve NRIs or international markets, or your B2B customers' teams use iPhones.

Android-first is fine when…

You are a free, mass-market or ad-supported app, your users are in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, or you are still testing the idea. Add iOS once the product works.

The bigger cost is the commission

For any app that sells digital goods, Apple's commission matters far more than the membership. It is 30% of digital sales, or 15% under the App Store Small Business Program for developers earning up to US$1 million a year, and 15% for qualifying subscriptions15. Enrol in the Small Business Program as soon as you start selling.

Practical tips for Indian developers

Practical tips for Indian developers
  1. Enrol as an organisation if you are a business, so the App Store shows your company name. You will need a D-U-N-S number.
  2. Use a company Apple Account, not a founder's personal one.
  3. Set a renewal reminder. If the membership lapses, your apps are removed from sale until you renew.
  4. Build cross-platform so iOS is an extra release, not a second project.
  5. Join the Small Business Program before your first paid sale.

Key terms, defined

Fee waiver — exemption from the membership fee for eligible organisations. Small Business Program — Apple's reduced 15% commission for smaller developers. TestFlight — Apple's beta testing service.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Apple developer account fee in India?

The Apple Developer Program costs US$99 per membership year, billed in local currency where available. At current exchange rates that is roughly ₹8,500; check the exact amount shown during enrolment. The Apple Developer Enterprise Program, for internal company apps, costs US$299 a year.

Is the Apple developer fee one-time or yearly?

Yearly. The membership must be renewed every year to keep your apps available on the App Store and to submit updates. Google Play's US$25 developer fee, by contrast, is one-time.

Can I get the Apple Developer Program for free?

Eligible nonprofit organisations, accredited educational institutions and government entities can request a fee waiver during enrolment. Anyone can also build and run apps on their own devices with a free Apple Account; the paid membership is needed to distribute on the App Store and use TestFlight.

Is it worth publishing on iOS in India?

If your app makes money from subscriptions, premium purchases or higher-income users, usually yes: iOS is a small share of Indian phones — about 6% of mobile web traffic — but iPhone users are over-represented among paying customers. For mass-market, free, ad-supported apps, starting Android-first is often smarter.

What do I get with an Apple developer account?

The right to publish on the App Store, beta testing through TestFlight, access to advanced capabilities such as push notifications and Apple Pay, App Store Connect analytics and sales reports, and access to beta software and developer support.

Do I need a Mac to publish an iOS app?

You need macOS and Xcode to build and upload, but you can use cloud build services instead of owning a Mac. Cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter and React Native let you write most of the code on Windows or Linux.
