Quick answer: What is DPIIT registration and how do you get it?
- Who — private limited companies, LLPs, partnerships and now cooperatives.
- Age and size — up to 10 years and ₹200 crore turnover; deep tech 20 years and ₹300 crore.
- Cost — free on the Startup India portal.
- Benefits — self-certification, IP rebates, procurement relaxations, schemes.
- Tax holiday — needs separate approval; turnover cap stays ₹100 crore.
Key takeaways
- Recognition is free and worth getting soon after incorporation.
- The 2026 framework doubled the turnover limit and added a deep-tech track.
- The tax holiday is a separate, stricter approval — don't assume it.
- A clear innovation write-up is the most common reason for success or rejection.
- Keep the certificate handy; investors, incubators and tenders ask for it.
DPIIT recognition is the closest thing India has to an official "startup" badge. It's free, it's online, and it unlocks a surprising number of practical benefits — from lighter compliance to cheaper patents to eligibility for seed grants. In February 2026, the government rewrote the rules for the first time since 20192. Here's what changed and how to apply.

Eligibility under the 2026 framework
| Criterion | Regular startups | Deep-tech startups |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum age | 10 years from incorporation | 20 years from incorporation |
| Turnover limit | ₹200 crore (was ₹100 crore) | ₹300 crore |
| Extra requirement | Innovation, improvement or scalable model | Ownership of, or progress toward, novel IP |
| Eligible entities | Pvt Ltd, LLP, registered partnership, cooperative societies | Same |
The framework also brought cooperative societies into scope for the first time3. Entities formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business still don't qualify.
How to apply

- Register on the Startup India portal and create your profile1.
- Fill the recognition form — entity details, address, directors or partners, sector.
- Write the innovation note — what problem you solve, how your solution is new or better, and how it scales or creates jobs.
- Upload documents — incorporation certificate and supporting proof such as a deck, website, product link or patent filing.
- Submit and respond — answer any queries promptly; you'll receive a recognition certificate number on approval.
Benefits of DPIIT recognition

Lighter compliance
Self-certification under several labour and environmental laws for a set period.
Cheaper, faster IP
Rebates on patent and trademark fees, and expedited patent examination.
Public procurement
Relaxations on prior experience and turnover criteria in many government tenders.
Funding access
Eligibility for the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme, Fund of Funds-backed investors and the startup credit guarantee.
Easier exit
Faster winding up under the insolvency framework for eligible startups.
Tax holiday (separate approval)
A 100% deduction of profits for three of the first ten years, after Inter-Ministerial Board approval.
The tax holiday, precisely
Recognition and the tax holiday are different things. The holiday needs a separate application to the Inter-Ministerial Board. Budget 2025 extended it to startups incorporated before 1 April 20304, and the turnover limit for the tax benefit stays at ₹100 crore even though recognition now goes to ₹200 crore2. The angel tax on share premiums — a long-standing headache — was abolished for all investors from FY 2025-26, so recognition no longer matters for that.
After recognition

- Store your certificate and DIPP/DPIIT number where your team can find it
- Apply to incubators running the Seed Fund Scheme
- Decide whether the tax holiday is worth applying for (only if you expect profits)
- Use the IP rebates before filing patents or trademarks
- Recheck eligibility as you approach the age or turnover limits
Key terms, defined
DPIIT — Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. Startup recognition — official startup status from DPIIT. Inter-Ministerial Board (IMB) — approves the startup tax holiday. Deep-tech startup — a new category for IP-led companies with long development cycles. Self-certification — declaring compliance yourself instead of facing routine inspections.
Frequently asked questions
Is DPIIT registration free?
Yes. Applying for DPIIT startup recognition on the Startup India portal has no government fee.
Who is eligible for DPIIT recognition in 2026?
Private limited companies, registered partnership firms, LLPs and, from February 2026, cooperative societies, up to 10 years from incorporation with turnover up to ₹200 crore in any year, working on innovation or a scalable model. Deep-tech startups can qualify for up to 20 years with turnover up to ₹300 crore.
Does DPIIT recognition give a tax exemption?
Not by itself. The three-year income tax holiday requires a separate certificate from the Inter-Ministerial Board, applies to companies and LLPs incorporated before 1 April 2030, and keeps a ₹100 crore turnover limit.
How long does DPIIT recognition take?
Applications are processed online; many are decided within a few weeks, though DPIIT can ask for more information, which adds time.
Can a company formed by splitting an existing business apply?
No. An entity formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business is not considered a startup.
What documents do I need?
Certificate of incorporation or registration, details of directors or partners, and a write-up explaining the innovation, scalability or employment potential; supporting evidence such as a pitch deck, website or patents helps.
