Quick answer: How do I analyse financial statements?

  1. Pay in India — financial analysts report ₹6.5–7.2 lakh, up 20% in two years (AmbitionBox).
  2. US — financial analysts earn a $103,570 median; jobs +7% to 2035 (BLS).
  3. Standards — IFRS is required in more than 140 jurisdictions (IFRS Foundation).
  4. Cash matters — capital ran out in 70% of recent startup shutdowns (CB Insights).
  5. Proof — a free 15-minute financial statement analysis test.

Key takeaways

  • Read all three statements together.
  • Trends beat single years.
  • Compare with peers.
  • Follow the cash.
  • Read the notes.

Picture a credit analyst at a bank reviewing a manufacturer's loan application. Revenue grew 25% and net profit 30% — the relationship manager is keen. She reads all three statements. Operating cash flow fell for the second year. Receivable days jumped from 60 to 110; inventory days rose too. A note mentions a large "other income" from selling land. Strip that out and operating margin actually fell. She calls the company: a big customer is paying slowly, and stock is building up. The loan is restructured with tighter covenants. Six months later the customer defaults — the bank's exposure is limited.

What financial statement analysis involves

Financial statement analysis is the skill of reading a company's financial reports to understand performance, financial health and risk. It covers the income statement (revenue, costs, profit), the balance sheet (what the company owns and owes) and the cash flow statement (where cash came from and went). Analysts calculate ratios, compare trends over several years, benchmark against peers, read notes and management commentary, judge quality of earnings and spot red flags. The skill is used in financial analysis, credit, equity research, audit, investment, corporate finance and even procurement.

Standards help comparison: IFRS Accounting Standards are required in more than 140 jurisdictions,1 and India's Ind AS follows IFRS closely. Cash is often where trouble shows first — CB Insights' 2026 analysis of startup shutdowns found running out of capital cited in 70% of cases, usually as the final symptom of deeper problems.2 Free resources such as Aswath Damodaran's NYU Stern data pages provide industry ratios and benchmarks for comparison.3 The skill is well paid: US financial analysts earn a $103,570 median, with jobs projected to grow 7% to 2035,4 and in India AmbitionBox lists financial analysts at a typical ₹6.5–7.2 lakh from more than 55,000 salaries, up 20% in two years.5

Interview questions, with how to answer them

"Walk me through how the three statements connect."

Net profit flows into equity and starts the cash flow statement; working capital and capex changes link the balance sheet and cash flows; ending cash appears on the balance sheet.

"Profit is up but cash is down — why?"

Possible reasons: rising receivables or inventory, big capex, one-off gains or aggressive revenue recognition.

"Which ratio would you check first for a lender?"

Interest cover and debt levels, plus operating cash flow.

"What's a one-off item?"

An unusual gain or cost, such as an asset sale, that shouldn't be counted as ongoing performance.

"How do you compare companies in different sizes?"

Use ratios and percentages, and compare with similar companies in the same industry.

Questions to ask in your interview

  • "What decisions does this analysis support?" — purpose.
  • "Which tools and data sources do you use?" — resources.
  • "How are recommendations reviewed?" — process.
  • "Which sectors will I cover?" — focus.

How AI is changing financial analysis

AI now extracts data from filings, summarises annual reports and earnings calls, and drafts analysis. That speeds up the first pass dramatically. But AI can misread tables, miss footnotes or invent numbers. Strong analysts use AI for speed and then verify figures against the source, focusing their time on judgement — what the numbers mean and what could go wrong.

How to analyse a company in one hour

Spend ten minutes on the business: what it sells, to whom and how it makes money. Spend twenty on five-year trends in revenue, margins, cash flow and debt. Spend fifteen on notes: one-offs, related parties, contingent liabilities and auditor comments. Spend fifteen comparing with a peer and writing three conclusions and three questions. Structure keeps you from drowning in detail.

How to spot earnings red flags

Compare net profit with operating cash flow over several years. Watch receivables and inventory growing faster than sales. Look for frequent "exceptional" items, changes in accounting policies, auditor resignations or qualifications, and large related-party transactions. None proves wrongdoing, but each deserves a question.

Common myths about financial analysis

"Profit growth means a healthy company." Cash, debt and quality matter too.

"One ratio tells the story." Patterns across ratios do.

"You need advanced maths." You need logic, scepticism and care.

How to write an analysis memo

Start with a one-line conclusion and recommendation. Follow with three to five key findings, each backed by a number and a trend. Note the main risks and what would change your view. Add a short table of key ratios and keep detail in an appendix. Decision-makers read the first paragraph; make it count.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Reading only the P&L.
  • Ignoring notes.
  • No peer comparison.
  • Missing one-off items.
  • Unchecked AI numbers.
