Quick answer: How do I start a career in human resources?

  1. Huge field — HR executives report ₹3.5–3.9 lakh from 1.3 lakh+ salaries (AmbitionBox).
  2. New rules — India's four labour codes replaced 29 central laws from 21 November 2025.
  3. Engagement — global employee engagement fell to 20% in 2025 (Gallup).
  4. AI — 43% of organisations used AI for HR tasks in 2025 (SHRM).
  5. Proof — a free 10-minute HR fundamentals test.

Key takeaways

  • Learn the whole employee lifecycle.
  • Know the rules you apply.
  • Confidentiality is non-negotiable.
  • Use data, not just instinct.
  • Be fair and consistent.

Picture a 300-person logistics company on a Monday. An HR executive has a new joiner starting at 9 am, a payroll cut-off on Wednesday, a manager asking how to handle repeated late arrivals, and an employee who has quietly asked to talk about harassment by a colleague. She sets up the joiner's laptop request and induction, checks attendance data for payroll, gives the manager the attendance policy and a fair conversation plan, and books a private room for the employee, explaining confidentiality and the complaint process. None of it is glamorous. All of it shapes whether people trust the company.

What HR professionals do

Human resources manages the employee lifecycle: workforce planning, recruitment, onboarding, compensation and payroll inputs, benefits, attendance and leave, performance management, learning, employee relations, policies and compliance, HR data and exits. Entry-level roles such as HR executive or HR coordinator handle much of the day-to-day; generalists cover several areas; specialists focus on one, such as talent acquisition or compensation; HR business partners advise leaders.

The rules changed recently in India. Four labour codes — on wages, industrial relations, social security, and occupational safety, health and working conditions — came into effect on 21 November 2025, replacing 29 central labour laws, though rules at state level have continued to roll out.1 HR teams must understand how definitions such as "wages" affect payroll and benefits. The people side matters as much: Gallup's State of the Global Workplace 2026 found global employee engagement fell to 20% in 2025, the lowest since 2020, with South Asia showing the largest drop.2 Technology is reshaping the work too — SHRM found 43% of organisations used AI for HR tasks in 2025, up from 26% the year before.3 HR is a large employer: AmbitionBox lists HR executives at a typical ₹3.5–3.9 lakh from more than 1.3 lakh salaries4 and HR managers at ₹10.7–11.8 lakh.5 In the US, HR specialists earn a $75,940 median.6

Interview questions, with how to answer them

"Why HR?"

Talk about solving people problems fairly and helping the business work well — not just "I like people".

"An employee reports harassment — what do you do?"

Listen, keep it confidential, explain the formal process, follow policy and the law, and protect against retaliation.

"How do you handle confidential data?"

Share only on a need-to-know basis, store it securely and follow data protection rules.

"What's in a full and final settlement?"

Pending salary, leave encashment as per policy, deductions, statutory dues and recoveries, processed on time.

"How would you reduce early attrition?"

Look at exit and joiner data, improve onboarding and manager check-ins, and fix expectation gaps in hiring.

Questions to ask in your interview

  • "What HR systems do you use?" — tools.
  • "Is the role generalist or specialist?" — scope.
  • "How has the company adapted to the labour codes?" — maturity.
  • "How do managers and HR work together?" — culture.

Career path

  • HR executive / coordinator — operations.

  • HR manager / HRBP — advising the business.
  • Head of HR / CHRO — people strategy.

A two-week plan

  1. Week 1: Foundations — Map the employee lifecycle and read summaries of the labour codes.
  2. Week 2: Prove it — Build an onboarding checklist and an Excel report; take the HR Fundamentals Certification.

Next: Talent Acquisition, HR Analytics and Workplace Ethics. Guides: talent acquisition, HR analytics and workplace ethics.

How HR shows up day to day

  • Queries — leave, pay, policies.

Table: A first-90-days plan (editorial guidance)

Learn the policies and systems first, and get to know managers and the payroll team. Take ownership of one process, such as onboarding, and run it reliably. By the third month, improve it — a checklist, a template or an automated reminder.

How AI is changing HR

AI now drafts job descriptions and policies, answers routine employee questions through chatbots, screens applications and summarises survey comments. SHRM's research shows recruiting is the most common use. That frees HR for judgement-heavy work, but it brings new duties: checking AI output for bias and errors, protecting employee data, and making sure people can always reach a human for sensitive matters. HR professionals who understand both the technology and its risks are increasingly valued.

How to handle a sensitive employee conversation

Prepare by reading the relevant policy and any records. Choose a private place and enough time. Start by explaining the purpose and confidentiality limits. Listen more than you speak, take notes and avoid promising outcomes you can't control. Explain the next steps and timelines clearly. Afterwards, record the conversation factually, follow the process and check in as promised. Consistency and documentation protect both the employee and the company.

How to read an HR policy

Policies are rules plus process. When you read one, note who it applies to, what's required, what's prohibited, how exceptions are approved and what happens if it's broken. Check that it matches current law — many policies need updating after the labour codes. Then think about how a new employee would understand it. If a manager can't explain it in two sentences, it probably needs rewriting in plain language.

Common myths about HR

"HR is just admin." It shapes hiring, culture, pay and risk.

"HR is there to protect employees only." HR serves both employees and the organisation, fairly.

"You don't need numbers in HR." Data drives modern HR decisions.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Vague "I love people" answers.
  • Breaking confidentiality.
  • Ignoring legal basics.
  • No Excel skills.
  • Inconsistent decisions.
