Next.js vs React:
what's the difference?

React is a JavaScript library for building user interfaces from components. Next.js is a framework built on React that adds routing, server rendering, static generation, data fetching, image optimisation and API routes. Use Next.js for most new websites and web apps — the React team itself recommends starting with a framework — and plain React for embedded widgets or apps with a separate backend.

Quick answer: What is the difference between Next.js and React?

  1. React — a UI library: components and state.
  2. Next.js — a React framework: routing, rendering, data, deployment.
  3. SEO — Next.js renders HTML on the server or at build time.
  4. Default — React recommends starting new apps with a framework.
  5. Plain React — widgets, embedded UIs, separate backends.

Key takeaways

  • Next.js is React plus the decisions every real app needs.
  • Server and static rendering help speed and search visibility.
  • Frameworks remove months of setup and plumbing.
  • Plain React still fits narrow, client-only use cases.
  • Learn React fundamentals first; they carry into any framework.

"Should we use Next.js or React?" is a bit like asking "should we use a car or an engine?" React is the engine for building interfaces. Next.js is a car built around it — with steering, brakes and seats included. The React team itself now recommends starting new apps with a framework1.

Why frameworks became the default

Create React App was deprecated for new projects in 20253. Real apps all need routing, data loading, code splitting and rendering choices; frameworks solve them consistently so teams don't rebuild the same plumbing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Next.js better than React?

They're not competitors. Next.js uses React and adds features like routing and server rendering. For complete websites and apps, Next.js usually saves time.

Do I need to learn React before Next.js?

Yes, the basics — components, props, state and hooks. Next.js builds on them.

Is Next.js good for SEO?

Yes. It can render pages on the server or at build time, so search engines and AI crawlers receive complete HTML.

What happened to Create React App?

The React team deprecated Create React App for new projects in 2025 and recommends frameworks such as Next.js or React Router, or build tools such as Vite.

Can Next.js build a static site?

Yes. Static export generates plain HTML files that can be hosted anywhere.

Where should I host a Next.js app?

Vercel offers first-class support; Netlify, cloud providers and Node servers also work, and static exports can go on any host.
