What the numbers say

What the numbers say: Half got a deal; Valuations get cut; Hidden dilution; Structure is negotiable.
What the numbers say

Half got a deal

48% of tech pitches closed on air — better than a coin toss, but far from guaranteed.

Valuations get cut

10 of 12 deals came in below the ask. Half were cut by 50% or more.

Hidden dilution

Two deals added advisory equity. Kelvin6k's founders gave 5% in total for ₹1 crore — an effective ₹20 crore valuation.

Structure is negotiable

Cinefai's deal split into equity and debt; Multibagg.ai negotiated a higher valuation than it asked.

Lessons for app founders

Checklist: Lessons for app founders — Anchor on evidence; Know your walk-away number; Count advisory equity; Value the partner, not just the price; Expect diligence.
Lessons for app founders
  • Anchor on evidence — revenue, retention and unit economics shorten valuation debates
  • Know your walk-away number — and your dilution across future rounds
  • Count advisory equity — it's dilution without cash
  • Value the partner, not just the price — distribution and expertise can be worth a lower valuation
  • Expect diligence — the on-air handshake is the start, not the end

The sharks themselves mostly built consumer brands and internet companies — Shaadi.com, boAt, OYO, SUGAR, Snapdeal, CarDekho group and others23 — so pitches with clear distribution stories tend to resonate. Off-screen, the same discipline applies with angel investors. Prepare with how to value your startup.

Key terms, defined

Implied valuation — the amount invested divided by the equity percentage. Advisory equity — equity given for advice, not money. Due diligence — investors' checks after agreeing terms. Dilution — the reduction in founders' ownership. Royalty deal — investment repaid as a share of revenue, common on the show for consumer brands.

Frequently asked questions

How many tech startups pitched on Shark Tank India season 5?

We counted 25 tech, AI and app-based startups among about 155 pitches recorded for season 5, which aired from 5 January to 17 March 2026 on Sony LIV.

What share of tech pitches got a deal?

Twelve of the 25 tech pitches (48%) received an on-air deal.

In our sample, yes. In 10 of 12 tech deals the implied valuation was lower than the ask, with a median change of −50%. One deal valued the company higher than asked.

Extra equity given to an investor for advice and support, on top of the equity bought with money. It increases founder dilution without adding cash.

Which sharks appeared in season 5?

Thirteen sharks rotated through the season, including Aman Gupta, Anupam Mittal, Namita Thapar, Ritesh Agarwal, Vineeta Singh, Kunal Bahl and Amit Jain, plus new sharks such as Varun Alagh and Kanika Tekriwal.
