Quick answer: Which AI certification is best for my career in 2027?

  1. Non-engineers — AWS Certified AI Practitioner ($100) or Google Cloud Generative AI Leader ($99).
  2. Developers — Microsoft AI-102 or Databricks Generative AI Engineer ($200) to prove you can build with LLMs.
  3. ML engineers — AWS ML Engineer – Associate ($150) or Google Cloud Professional ML Engineer ($200).
  4. Learning first — DeepLearning.AI's LLM course, Google AI Essentials and Anthropic's free courses build the skill before an exam.

Key takeaways

  • Choose an AI certification by role: business users, developers and ML engineers need different ones.
  • Vendor exams (AWS, Microsoft, Google, Databricks) beat course badges for job filters because they're proctored.
  • Build one working AI project — a retrieval chatbot, an evaluated prompt set — to pair with whichever credential you earn.

In 2027 nearly every job description mentions AI, but they mean very different things. A marketing manager needs to use AI tools well and judge their output; a developer needs to wire a model into a product; an ML engineer needs to train, deploy and monitor models. The World Economic Forum lists AI and big data as the fastest-growing skill set to 2030.1 That demand has produced hundreds of AI certificates, most of them course badges. This ranking puts the proctored, vendor-issued exams first, because those are what employers can verify, and then the best courses to get you ready.

Amazon Web Services · FoundationalTop pick for 2027

AWS Certified AI Practitioner

Cost
$1002
Format
90 minutes, 65 questions

The best AI credential for people who don't write code. It proves you understand machine learning, generative AI, prompt design and responsible-AI risks well enough to make decisions, in a $100, 90-minute exam from the largest cloud provider. Product managers, analysts, consultants and sales engineers get the most from it. Engineers should skip ahead to the associate-level exams.

Best fornon-engineers who make decisions about AI

Microsoft · Associate

Microsoft Azure AI Engineer Associate (AI-102)

Cost
Exam priced by country3
Format
100 minutes

The developer's AI credential in Microsoft-heavy organisations. AI-102 tests building solutions with Azure AI services, search and Azure OpenAI: retrieval, agents, vision and language. It's practical and well-recognised in enterprise IT, and you renew it free online each year. Expect to need real coding practice; this is not a theory exam.

Best fordevelopers in Microsoft-based companies

Google Cloud · Foundational

Google Cloud Generative AI Leader

Cost
$994
Format
90 minutes, multiple choice

The AI leadership credential. Google Cloud built it for managers and decision-makers who choose AI use cases, weigh risk and lead adoption. At $99 for 90 minutes, it's a low-cost way for a non-technical leader to show they can steer AI work. It won't prove engineering skill, and doesn't try to.

Best formanagers, consultants and founders

Amazon Web Services · Associate

AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer – Associate

Cost
$1505

For engineers who put machine learning into production on AWS: data preparation, model training, deployment, monitoring and cost. At $150, it's a strong signal for ML-engineering and MLOps roles. It assumes you already code and know ML fundamentals; take the AI Practitioner first if you don't.

Best forML and MLOps engineers on AWS

Google Cloud · Professional

Google Cloud Professional Machine Learning Engineer

Cost
$2006
Format
2 hours, multiple choice

Google Cloud's professional-level ML exam, $200 for two hours, and one of the more demanding AI credentials. It covers framing ML problems, building pipelines and running models responsibly in production. It's best taken after you've shipped at least one model; for experienced ML engineers it's a mark of seniority.

Best forsenior ML engineers on Google Cloud

Databricks · Associate

Databricks Certified Generative AI Engineer Associate

Cost
$2007
Format
90 minutes

The most hands-on generative-AI exam on the list. Databricks tests building LLM applications: retrieval-augmented generation, chains, evaluation and deployment, for $200 in 90 minutes. Data and AI engineers at companies running Databricks will find it directly relevant. It's narrow by design; if your company doesn't use Databricks, AI-102 is more portable.

Best forteams building LLM apps on Databricks

DeepLearning.AI & AWS / Coursera · Intermediate

Generative AI with Large Language Models

Cost
Coursera plan8
Time
2 weeks at 10 hours a week

Not an exam, but the best short course for understanding how large language models work: pre-training, fine-tuning, RLHF and deployment trade-offs, built by DeepLearning.AI with AWS. It takes about two weeks at 10 hours a week and is free to audit. Do it before an engineering exam; it makes the exam's scenarios make sense.

Best fordevelopers who want to understand LLMs first

Google / Coursera · Beginner

Google AI Essentials

Cost
$49/mo Coursera plan9
Time
Under 10 hours (per course page)

The best on-ramp for everyone else. Google AI Essentials teaches practical, responsible use of generative AI at work in under 10 hours. It's a course certificate rather than a proctored exam, so it signals initiative more than mastery. Pair it with AWS AI Practitioner or Google's Generative AI Leader if you want a verifiable credential.

Microsoft · Foundational

Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-900)

Cost
Exam priced by country10
Format
Microsoft fundamentals exam

Microsoft's AI fundamentals exam, a cheaper-to-prepare alternative to AWS AI Practitioner because the training is free on Microsoft Learn. It covers core AI workloads and generative AI concepts on Azure. Good for students and Microsoft-shop employees; developers should treat it as a stepping stone to AI-102.

Best forstudents and Microsoft-shop staff

Anthropic · Beginner–Intermediate

Anthropic Academy – Claude Courses

Cost
Free11

Free courses from Anthropic, the company behind Claude, on prompting, building with its API and working with AI agents. There's no proctored exam, so it's a learning resource rather than a credential, but it's one of the clearest free introductions to building with a modern model. Use it to make your portfolio project, then certify with a vendor exam.

Table: Best AI certification by role, with a first and second step

The AI portfolio project that makes any certification count

Employers hiring for AI work ask what you've built. One small, well-documented project does more than a second badge.

Checklist: The AI portfolio project that makes any certification count — A retrieval chatbot; An evaluation set; A cost note; A risk note; A two-minute demo.
The AI portfolio project that makes any certification count
  • A retrieval chatbot — answers questions from 20–50 real documents and cites its sources.
  • An evaluation set — 30 test questions with expected answers, and a score before and after you improved the prompt.
  • A cost note — what each answer costs to run, and how you reduced it.
  • A risk note — what could go wrong (wrong answers, private data, bias) and how you guarded against it.
  • A two-minute demo — screen recording linked from your LinkedIn and résumé.

AI certifications that aren't worth it

Avoid certificates that have no assessment, come from issuers no employer has heard of, or promise to make you an AI engineer in a weekend. A useful test: search LinkedIn jobs for the certificate's exact name. If it appears in almost no postings, it won't help you pass a screen. Spend the money on a vendor exam and the time on a project instead.

How we ranked these picks

We ranked AI credentials on three things: whether a proctored exam stands behind them, how widely the issuer is recognised in job posts, and how directly they prove a skill for a specific role (business, developer, ML engineer). Proctored vendor exams rank above course certificates; within each role, we favoured lower cost and broader recognition. Fees and formats were checked on official pages on 3 November 2026.

Key terms, defined

  • Generative AI — AI that creates text, images or code from a prompt, such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
  • RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) — a technique that lets a model answer from your own documents and cite them.
  • MLOps — the practice of deploying, monitoring and updating machine-learning models in production.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI certification for beginners?

AWS Certified AI Practitioner is the best AI certification for beginners who want a recognised exam: it costs $100, needs no coding and covers machine learning, generative AI and responsible AI. Microsoft AI-900 is a close alternative with free official training. If you just want to use AI better at work, start with Google AI Essentials.

Which AI certification is most recognised by employers?

Certifications from the major cloud providers are the most recognised: AWS Certified AI Practitioner and ML Engineer, Microsoft AI-102 and Google Cloud's ML Engineer and Generative AI Leader. Employers can verify them and many job posts name them. Course certificates help you learn but carry less weight in screening.

Do I need to code to get an AI certification?

Not for all of them. AWS AI Practitioner, Microsoft AI-900, Google Cloud Generative AI Leader and Google AI Essentials require no coding. Microsoft AI-102, AWS ML Engineer, Google Cloud Professional ML Engineer and Databricks Generative AI Engineer expect you to write code and understand machine learning.

How much does an AI certification cost?

As listed on official pages in November 2026: AWS AI Practitioner $100, Google Cloud Generative AI Leader $99, AWS ML Engineer – Associate $150, Google Cloud Professional ML Engineer $200 and Databricks Generative AI Engineer $200. Microsoft prices AI-900 and AI-102 by country. Anthropic's courses are free.

Is an AI certification worth it in 2027?

Yes, if it matches your role and you pair it with a project. AI skills are among the fastest-growing in demand, and a proctored credential gives recruiters something to verify. It's not worth it if you collect several beginner badges without ever building or applying anything with AI.

Which AI certification is best in India?

The same vendor certifications lead in India: AWS AI Practitioner, Microsoft AI-900 and AI-102, and Google Cloud's AI exams are widely recognised by global capability centres, IT services firms and product companies. Microsoft lists local exam prices at booking, and AWS and Google list USD fees.
