How to earn money from an app
a realistic guide

To earn money from an app, match the model to how people use it — subscriptions for ongoing value, in-app purchases for games and content, commissions for marketplaces, ads only at large scale — then set up payments correctly (store billing for digital goods, a gateway like Razorpay for physical goods and services), price with Indian purchasing power in mind, and focus on retention. Most apps earn little until they keep users coming back.

Quick answer: How can I earn money from my app?

  1. Fit the model to usage — not the other way round.
  2. Use the right payment rails — store billing for digital goods, a gateway for physical ones.
  3. Price for India — lower price points, UPI, regional pricing.
  4. Retention first — revenue follows users who stay.
  5. Expect a slow start — most apps earn little in year one.

Key takeaways

  • Downloads don't pay; engaged users do.
  • Revenue per user in India is lower than in the US — plan volume or a global audience.
  • Annual plans and free trials improve subscription revenue.
  • B2B customers often pay more than consumers for the same value.
  • Track ARPU, conversion to paid and churn monthly.

The honest truth about app income is that most apps earn almost nothing, and a few earn a great deal. The difference is rarely the monetization model. It's whether people come back. An app with 1,000 users who open it daily can out-earn one with 100,000 downloads and no habit. So this guide starts with the model, but keeps returning to the thing that actually pays: retention.

Step 2: set up payments correctly

Digital goods and subscriptions

Use Apple's and Google's in-app billing. Commissions are typically 30%, or 15% for eligible small developers and many subscriptions12.

Physical goods and services

Food, rides, products, appointments — use a payment gateway such as Razorpay, whose standard pricing is published3.

Ads

Integrate an ad network such as AdMob, which pays out to your bank account4.

Step 3: price for Indian users

Checklist: Step 3: price for Indian users — Lower price points; Annual plans; Short plans; UPI-friendly checkout; Free trials.
Step 3: price for Indian users
  • Lower price points — set India-specific prices in the store consoles rather than converting US prices
  • Annual plans — a discount for paying yearly improves cash flow and retention
  • Short plans — weekly or monthly passes lower the barrier for first-time payers
  • UPI-friendly checkout for anything outside store billing
  • Free trials that show value within the trial period

A realistic timeline
  1. Months 0–3: launch, find the users who stay, fix onboarding.
  2. Months 3–6: introduce payment; test price and paywall placement.
  3. Months 6–12: improve retention and conversion; add annual plans.
  4. Year 2: scale acquisition once each paying user is profitable.

Taxes and paperwork

App income is taxable, and GST may apply depending on turnover and the type of service, including export of services when selling abroad5. Get a chartered accountant involved once money flows regularly.

If users install and disappear, revenue won't follow — a retention and churn audit finds why.

Key terms, defined

ARPU — average revenue per user. Conversion rate — share of users who pay. Churn — paying users who cancel. Paywall — the screen offering paid access. LTV — lifetime value, total revenue expected from a user.

Frequently asked questions

How much money can an app make?

Anywhere from nothing to millions. Most apps earn very little because few users stay. Earnings depend on active users, the share who pay or see ads, price, and where users live. Focus on retention before expecting meaningful income.

How do I get paid for my app in India?

For digital goods sold in apps, Apple and Google collect payment and pay you after their commission into your bank account. For physical goods and services, use an Indian payment gateway such as Razorpay, Cashfree or PayU. Ads pay through the ad network, such as AdMob.

Is it better to charge upfront or use freemium?

Freemium or a free trial usually wins on mobile because people try before they buy. Paid upfront apps can work for niche professional tools with strong word of mouth.

How long until an app starts earning?

Some apps earn from their first paying user in weeks; most take months of improving retention and pricing. Ads need significant scale. Budget for six to eighteen months before income becomes meaningful.

Do I need to pay tax on app income in India?

Yes. App income is taxable, and GST may apply depending on turnover and the nature of services, including export of services. Consult a chartered accountant once you start earning.

What is ARPU?

Average revenue per user — total revenue divided by active users over a period. It shows how well an app monetizes its audience and helps compare models.
