How to get an
email marketing job

To get an email marketing job in 2027, show you can grow and use an email list profitably: consent-based list building, segmentation, automated flows like welcome and cart recovery, copy and design that earn clicks, deliverability that meets Gmail and Yahoo sender rules, and measurement based on clicks and revenue now that open rates are unreliable. Build one automated flow with results and verify your skills with a free test.

Quick answer: How do I get a job in email marketing?

  1. Sender rules — Gmail requires bulk senders to authenticate, offer one-click unsubscribe and stay under 0.3% spam.
  2. Opens are unreliable — Apple Mail Privacy Protection affects over half of opens (Litmus, 2025).
  3. Privacy law — India's DPDP Rules (2025) tighten consent for personal data.
  4. What's tested — lists, segmentation, flows, deliverability, measurement.
  5. Proof — an automated flow with click and revenue results.

Key takeaways

  • Owned audiences are valuable; email is still one of them.
  • Automated flows usually earn more than one-off campaigns.
  • Deliverability is a technical and behavioural discipline.
  • Measure clicks, conversions and revenue, not opens.
  • Consent and easy unsubscribes protect reputation and comply with law.

Picture an online pet store whose email results collapsed over three months. Open rates look fine, yet sales from email have halved. Two candidates are asked why. The first suggests more emails with brighter designs. The second checks the sending domain: no DMARC record, a spam complaint rate above 0.5% after a bought list was imported, and Gmail delivery mostly landing in spam. The "fine" open rates were inflated by Apple's privacy feature. Her plan: authenticate the domain properly and suppress the bought and inactive contacts. She would add one-click unsubscribe, rebuild the welcome and cart-recovery flows, and report on clicks and revenue. Six weeks later, email revenue recovers. She gets the job.

What email marketing work is

Email marketing is building and using a permission-based list to inform, convert and retain customers: list growth, segmentation, campaigns and automated flows, copy and design, deliverability, testing, privacy compliance and reporting. Titles include email marketing executive or specialist, CRM executive or manager and lifecycle marketer.

The rules have tightened. Google's email sender guidelines require bulk senders to authenticate with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, offer one-click unsubscribe for marketing messages and keep reported spam rates below 0.3%.1 Measurement has changed too: Apple Mail Privacy Protection can register opens automatically, and Litmus treats those opens as unreliable;2 by 2025 they accounted for more than half of email opens, according to Litmus data reported by Benchmark Email.3 In India, the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules notified in November 2025 phase in stricter consent and data obligations.4 AmbitionBox lists email marketing specialists at a typical ₹5.6–6.1 lakh.5

Interview questions, with how to answer them

"Open rates are high but sales are falling. Why?"

Opens may be inflated by privacy features; check deliverability, clicks and conversions instead.

"What do SPF, DKIM and DMARC do?"

They authenticate that mail comes from your domain and tell receivers how to handle failures.

"How would you grow a list?"

Valuable sign-up offers, clear consent, good placement on site and checkout, and no bought lists.

"How many emails is too many?"

It depends on value and engagement; watch unsubscribes, complaints and revenue per subscriber.

"How do you test emails?"

One variable at a time — subject, offer, content — judged on clicks or revenue.

Questions to ask in your interview

  • "What's your current spam complaint rate, and is the domain authenticated?" — reveals deliverability health.
  • "Which flows are live today?" — shows how much automation exists.
  • "How do you measure email's contribution?" — tells you whether open rates still dominate.
  • "How is consent collected?" — exposes compliance risk.

Your first 90 days in email marketing

PeriodFocusWhat good looks like
Days 1–30Deliverability, consent and list auditHealthy sending reputation
Days 31–60Rebuild core flowsRevenue from automation rising
Days 61–90Segmented campaigns and new reportingEmail judged on clicks and revenue

Table: A first-90-days plan (editorial guidance)

Email roles often start with hidden problems: weak authentication, bloated lists, complaint rates creeping up and reports still built on opens. Fix those first, because nothing else works if email lands in spam. Then rebuild the core automated flows, which typically earn a large share of email revenue with little ongoing effort. Finally, move reporting to clicks, conversions and revenue per subscriber. Email marketers who protect deliverability and prove revenue become CRM and retention leaders.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Reporting open rates as success.
  • Ignoring authentication.
  • No suppression of inactive contacts.
  • Blasting everyone the same message.

Frequently asked questions

What does an email marketing specialist do?

They build and manage email programmes: growing lists with consent, segmenting subscribers, writing and designing emails, building automated flows, maintaining deliverability, testing and reporting on results.

What are the Gmail bulk sender requirements?

Google requires senders of large volumes to Gmail to authenticate with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, support one-click unsubscribe for marketing mail, and keep reported spam rates below 0.3%, among other rules. Yahoo introduced similar requirements.

Why are open rates unreliable?

Apple Mail Privacy Protection preloads images, which can register opens whether or not people read the email. Litmus reported it affected more than half of email opens in 2025. Clicks, conversions and revenue are more reliable.

Which email automations matter most?

Welcome series, abandoned cart or browse flows, post-purchase and onboarding sequences, win-back campaigns and transactional messages with helpful content.

How much do email marketers earn in India?

AmbitionBox lists email marketing executives at a typical ₹3.2–3.5 lakh and email marketing specialists at ₹5.6–6.1 lakh a year (October 2026). CRM managers earn about ₹7.2–7.9 lakh.

Which email tools should I learn?

Learn one platform well — such as Mailchimp, Klaviyo, Brevo, HubSpot or a CRM's email tools — plus basic HTML email, authentication concepts and analytics. The principles transfer.
