Quick answer: Which online certifications are completely free in 2027?

  1. Tech — Harvard CS50 and CS50 AI, Kaggle Learn and freeCodeCamp: free courses, free certificates.
  2. AI basics — Elements of AI from the University of Helsinki, free from first lesson to certificate.
  3. Marketing — HubSpot Academy, Google Skillshop and Semrush Academy, all free to learn and certify.
  4. Watch for 'free to audit' — on many platforms the course is free but the certificate isn't; none of those are on this list.

Key takeaways

  • Free and respected aren't opposites: Harvard, Google, HubSpot and Kaggle issue free certificates employers recognise.
  • Free certificates prove learning, not proctored mastery; pair them with a project or one paid exam where jobs require it.
  • Avoid 'free' courses that charge for the certificate at the end; check before you start.

Search "free certification" and most results are free to start and paid to finish: the lessons cost nothing, then the certificate costs $49 or more. This list is strict. Every pick lets you learn and earn the credential without paying, as of November 2026, and every issuer is one a recruiter will recognise: Harvard, Google, HubSpot, Kaggle, Microsoft, the University of Helsinki. Free certificates are proof that you learnt something and finished it. They're not proctored certifications, and the guide is honest about where you'll still need a paid exam.

CS50: Introduction to Computer Science

Cost
Free1

Harvard's famous introduction to computer science, free online with a free CS50 certificate when you finish every problem set and the final project. It's hard: expect C, Python, SQL and web programming, and many weeks of work. That difficulty is why it's respected. edX sells an optional verified certificate, but you don't need it.

How to spot a certificate that isn't really free

Check three things before you start any "free" course, because the paywall usually sits at the end.

Checklist: How to spot a certificate that isn't really free — Is the certificate free, or just the course?; Is there a time limit?; Who issues it?; Is there any assessment?.
How to spot a certificate that isn't really free
  • Is the certificate free, or just the course? — "Free to audit" means the certificate costs extra.
  • Is there a time limit? — some free trials convert to paid subscriptions after 7 days.
  • Who issues it? — a certificate from an issuer no employer has heard of adds nothing to a résumé.
  • Is there any assessment? — a certificate for watching videos carries less weight than one for passing projects or tests.

Table: Free certifications matched to career goals

When you'll still need a paid certification

Free certificates prove learning; proctored certifications prove mastery under exam conditions, and some job filters require them by name. Security roles often ask for CompTIA Security+, cloud roles for AWS or Azure exams, and project roles for CAPM or PMP. Use free courses to learn and to find out whether you like the field, then spend on one exam. Before you book, check your level with a free Science of Apps practice test.

How we ranked these picks

We only included programmes where both the learning and the certificate cost nothing on the issuer's site as of 3 November 2026, and where the issuer is widely recognised by employers. We then ordered them by how demanding the assessment is, because harder free certificates (graded projects, problem sets) carry more weight than quizzes.

Frequently asked questions

Which certifications are completely free?

Harvard's CS50 courses (with a free CS50 certificate), Elements of AI, Kaggle Learn, freeCodeCamp, HubSpot Academy, Google Skillshop and Semrush Academy are free to learn and free to certify. Microsoft Learn's training and badges are free, but its certification exams are paid. Science of Apps also offers 1,200+ free certification tests.

Are free certificates worth putting on a resume?

Yes, when they're from a recognised issuer and relevant to the job. A Harvard CS50 certificate or Google Ads certification shows real effort and skill. List the most relevant two or three, link projects you built, and leave off unrelated or very short certificates that make the section look padded.

Is the Harvard CS50 certificate really free?

Yes. Completing all CS50x problem sets and the final project on Harvard's CS50 site earns a free CS50 certificate. edX also sells an optional verified certificate for a fee, which some people prefer for the edX branding, but it isn't required.

Do free certifications expire?

Some do. Google Skillshop and HubSpot certifications must be renewed periodically by retaking the assessment, because the platforms change. Course completion certificates such as CS50 and Elements of AI don't expire. Check each issuer's renewal rules and add an expiry date on LinkedIn where one applies.

Can free certifications get me a job?

They can help you get interviews, especially combined with projects, but on their own they rarely decide a hire. For entry-level roles in web development, data and marketing, a free certificate plus two or three portfolio projects is a strong start. For roles that filter for named paid certifications, add that exam.
