Figma skills
employers want

Employers in 2027 expect designers to be fluent in Figma beyond drawing screens: auto layout that responds to content, components with variants and properties, variables for themes and tokens, realistic prototypes, shared libraries, Dev Mode handoff, and files others can navigate. Two-thirds of Figma's users aren't designers, so tidy, collaborative files matter. Rebuild a real screen properly and verify your skills with a free test.

Quick answer: What Figma skills do design jobs require?

  1. Huge user base — Figma had 13 million+ monthly active users in early 2025 (S-1).
  2. Cross-functional — two-thirds of those users weren't designers.
  3. What's tested — auto layout, components, variables, prototypes, handoff.
  4. Team-ready files — naming, pages and libraries others can use.
  5. Proof — a responsive, componentised file with a working prototype.

Key takeaways

  • Auto layout is the foundation of responsive, maintainable designs.
  • Components with variants and properties make systems scale.
  • Variables power themes, modes and design tokens.
  • Developers, PMs and writers use your files — keep them tidy.
  • Tool skill matters less than the design judgement behind it.

Picture a design take-home at a SaaS company: build a settings page. One candidate submits a beautiful file — but every element is a loose rectangle, text overlaps when a label gets longer, and the "dark mode" version is a duplicated page with hand-changed colours. Another submits the same page built with auto layout. Toggles and inputs are components with variants for state and size, and colours are variables with light and dark modes. The prototype switches tabs, and frames are named so a developer can find everything in Dev Mode. When the interviewer pastes in a 40-character German label, her layout simply grows. She gets the offer, because her file works like a product, not a picture.

What Figma fluency means

Figma is the dominant collaborative interface design tool. Professional fluency means using it to build designs that are responsive (auto layout and constraints), systematic (components, variants, properties, styles and variables), testable (prototypes), and ready for collaboration (libraries, naming, branching and Dev Mode for developers).

Collaboration is the point. Figma's 2025 S-1 filing reported more than 13 million monthly active users, two-thirds of whom weren't designers — developers, product managers, researchers, marketers and writers.1 That means your file is read and used by many people. Figma's own documentation explains how auto layout makes frames adapt to content2 and how variables power themes and design tokens.3 AI features are spreading too — Figma's 2025 survey found one in three product builders launching AI products that year.4 In India, AmbitionBox lists UI designers at a typical ₹6–6.6 lakh.5

Your CV

Make fluency concrete: "Rebuilt team's component library with variants and variables; reduced detached instances by 70%; added Dev Mode annotations that cut handoff questions in half."

Interview questions, with how to answer them

"When do you use auto layout?"

Almost always for UI — so components respond to content and screen size.

"Variants or separate components?"

Variants for different states and sizes of the same component; separate components for different purposes.

"How do you set up dark mode?"

Semantic colour variables with light and dark modes applied to frames, not duplicated screens.

"How do you keep files tidy for teams?"

Clear pages and sections, naming conventions, status labels and removing unused layers.

"How do developers use your designs?"

Through Dev Mode with components, variables and annotations, and ready-for-dev markers.

Questions to ask in your interview

  • "Is there a shared library, and who maintains it?" — tells you the system maturity.
  • "How are files organised across teams?" — reveals conventions.
  • "Do developers use Dev Mode?" — shows handoff practice.
  • "Are variables mapped to code tokens?" — shows design-code parity.

Could you pass the Figma Certification today?

Hiring managers test judgement with scenarios like this one. Answer it before you open the explanation — the certification has 20 of them, 30 minutes, 75% to pass.

You want a card's title and description to stack with 12 px between them, and the card to grow as text is added. What do you use?

  1. Vertical auto layout with a 12 px gap and height set to Hug
  2. A fixed-height frame with the text layers grouped
  3. Two separate frames aligned with smart guides
  4. A layout grid with 12 px rows
Show the answer

A. Vertical auto layout with a 12 px gap and height set to Hug — Vertical auto layout spaces children evenly and Hug lets the frame grow with its content, so the card never clips text.

How Figma shows up day to day

  • Designing — screens and flows with components.
  • Library work — updates and new variants.
  • Prototyping — for tests and reviews.
  • Comments — feedback from teams.
  • Handoff — Dev Mode and annotations.
  • File clean-up — keeping work navigable.

More questions interviewers ask

"How do you avoid variant explosion?"

Use properties (boolean, instance swap, text) instead of variants for every combination.

"How do you version shared libraries?"

Branching, clear release notes and communicating breaking changes.

Your first 90 days with a design team's Figma

PeriodFocusWhat good looks like
Days 1–30Learn the library and file conventionsFiles others can follow
Days 31–60Fix gaps in components you useFewer detached instances
Days 61–90Improve variables or handoffSmoother collaboration

Table: A first-90-days plan (editorial guidance)

Figma fluency shows quickly in a new team. Learn the library and conventions first, and match them. When you hit gaps — missing states, broken auto layout — fix them in the library rather than detaching. Then look for wider improvements, such as setting up variables for themes or improving Dev Mode annotations. Designers who make everyone's files better are noticed fast.

How to present Figma work in a portfolio

Recruiters rarely open your Figma files during a first screen, so the case study has to show your Figma skill for you. Include a short clip or a few frames of a component and its variants, and explain what each property controls and why you set it up that way. Show one screen at mobile and desktop widths, built with auto layout, so a reviewer can see it adapts rather than being redrawn. If you used variables for themes or modes, show the same screen in both. Add a cropped view of your layer panel with named layers and frames, because tidy structure is the first thing a design lead checks when your file is handed to them.

In the interview, expect a live exercise: rebuild a card or form from a screenshot in 30–45 minutes. Talk while you work. Explain why you wrap elements in auto layout, which values you turn into variables, and when you'd create a component rather than copying. Finishing neatly matters less than showing a repeatable, team-friendly way of working. Afterwards, offer to share a view-only link to a cleaned-up file so the team can check your structure in their own time.

Keep it honest: if a file was built by a team, say which parts you owned.

Mistakes that cost candidates

  • Groups instead of auto layout.
  • Detached components.
  • Hard-coded colours.
  • Messy layer names.
  • Pretty files that don't adapt.

Key terms, defined

  • Auto layout — Figma frames that arrange and resize content automatically.
  • Component — a reusable design element with instances.
  • Variant — a version of a component for a state or size.
  • Variable — a stored value that can change by mode.
  • Dev Mode — Figma's developer inspection and handoff view.

Frequently asked questions

What Figma skills do employers expect?

Auto layout, constraints, components with variants and properties, variables and modes, styles, shared libraries, prototyping with interactions and conditional logic, Dev Mode handoff, and organised files with clear naming.

Is Figma enough to get a design job?

No. Figma is the tool; employers hire for problem solving, research, interaction and visual design judgement. But weak Figma skills slow teams down and show up quickly in interviews.

What is auto layout?

Auto layout makes frames resize and arrange their contents automatically based on spacing, padding and direction rules, so designs adapt to different content and screen sizes.

What are Figma variables?

Variables store reusable values — colours, numbers, strings and booleans — that can switch between modes such as light and dark themes, and map to design tokens used in code.

What is Dev Mode?

Dev Mode is Figma's interface for developers to inspect designs, see measurements, code snippets and component details, and track which designs are ready for development.

How long does it take to learn Figma well?

Basics take days; professional fluency — auto layout, components, variables and tidy files — usually takes a few months of real project work.
