Tests vector databases and semantic search — embeddings and similarity metrics, approximate nearest-neighbour indexes such as HNSW and IVF, chunking and hybrid retrieval for RAG, and running vector search in production. Pass to earn Vector Database & Semantic Search SOA-VDSS.

What is the Vector Database & Semantic Search Certification?

The Vector Database & Semantic Search Certification is a free intermediate-level, 20-minute skill test from Science of Apps. It tests vector databases and semantic search — embeddings and similarity metrics, approximate nearest-neighbour indexes such as HNSW and IVF, chunking and hybrid retrieval for RAG, and running vector search in production. Score 70% or more on its 20 questions to earn a verifiable Vector Database & Semantic Search certificate (SOA-VDSS). Every question is based on published standards and research — including Faiss wiki (Meta AI Research), What is retrieval-augmented generation? (IBM), Sentence Transformers documentation (SBERT) — and each answer is explained with its source.

Cosine similarity between two embedding vectors measures

  1. the straight-line distance between their end points
  2. the number of dimensions they have in common
  3. the angle between them, ignoring their length
  4. how many tokens the original texts shared
Show the answer

C. the angle between them, ignoring their length — For normalised vectors, cosine similarity and dot product rank results the same way. The real test has 20 questions like this.

How the test works

  1. 20 minutes, 20 questions

One question per screen, with a progress bar and a countdown. Your progress is saved on this device if you need to pause.

How do I take the Vector Database & Semantic Search Certification for free?

Read the four skill areas on this page, then take the 20-minute test online — no fee, course or sign-up. You see every answer explained when you finish. Score 70% or more and you get a Vector Database & Semantic Search certificate straight away, on screen, as a PDF and by email, with a credential ID anyone can verify.

Are the Vector Database & Semantic Search Certification questions based on real standards?

Yes. The questions are original scenarios written by Science of Apps, and each one is based on a public source you can read: Faiss wiki (Meta AI Research); What is retrieval-augmented generation? (IBM); Sentence Transformers documentation (SBERT); OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications (OWASP); Redis documentation (Redis); Evals guide (OpenAI). The source is shown under each question and linked in the answer review. Science of Apps doesn't copy questions from other tests.

What does the Vector Database & Semantic Search Certification cover?

Four skill areas with five questions each, drawn from a bank of 10 per area so a retake brings new questions: Embeddings and Similarity (Text embeddings, Distance metrics and Embedding model choice); Indexing and ANN Search (Approximate nearest neighbour, HNSW and IVF and Quantization); Retrieval for RAG (Chunking, Hybrid search and Reranking and evaluation); Vector Search in Production (Updates and freshness, Security and multi-tenancy and Cost and scaling). Every question is an original scenario based on a published standard, official documentation or research, named under the question.

Who should take the Vector Database & Semantic Search Certification?

AI engineer, Search engineer, Backend developer, Machine learning engineer and Data engineer. It suits anyone who wants a quick, verifiable way to show Vector Database & Semantic Search skills, from students and career switchers to experienced professionals.

Can I use this for vector database certification, vector database course or Pinecone pgvector test?

Yes. The Vector Database & Semantic Search Certification is free and covers all of these: 20 scenario questions in 20 minutes, each answer explained with the source it comes from, so it works as interview and exam practice. It isn't a full course, so use the areas you miss as your study list. Scoring 70% or more earns a verifiable certificate.
