What the test covers

4 skills, each with one question at every level from N5 to N1, so each skill starts easy and ends hard. They’re drawn from a bank of 60, 3 per skill and level, so a retake brings questions you haven't seen.

Listening clips are short recordings made with a synthetic Japanese voice, and each has a transcript for anyone who can't listen. Speaking and writing aren't tested.

How your level is worked out

Your level is the highest one at which you answer at least 3 of its 4 questions correctly, as long as you got at least half right at every level below it. If no level qualifies, the result is below N5, with no certificate. So a slip on one easy question doesn’t cap your result, but a real gap does. Your results show your score at each level and in each skill, and every question with the right answer and why.

How the test works

  1. 30 minutes, 20 questions

One question per screen with a countdown. Each skill starts easy and gets harder. Your progress is saved on this device if you need to pause.

  2. Graded on our server

Answers reach the page only after you submit, so a level can only be earned by answering correctly.

  3. Your level, explained

See your level, your score at each level and in each skill, and every question with the right answer and why.

  4. Your certificate

It states your level, with a QR code and credential ID. Download a PDF or PNG, add it to LinkedIn, and it's emailed to you.

What is the Japanese Level Test?

The Science of Apps Japanese Level Certificate is a free 30-minute online test of grammar, vocabulary and kanji, reading and listening, reported on the familiar N5–N1 scale. Yes. Taking the test, receiving your certificate as a PDF and by email, adding it to LinkedIn and having it verified are all free, with no sign-up. The certificate states your level on the Japanese N5–N1 scale (for example N3). It has a credential ID and QR code anyone can check.

Can I use this Japanese certificate for a visa, immigration or university admission?

No. A free skills credential for your CV, LinkedIn and job applications. Not proctored, and not accepted for visas, immigration or university admission. If an embassy, university or regulator asks for a language test, take the one they name.

How is my Japanese level worked out?

Each test has 4 questions at every level, one per skill, so it can tell what you handle comfortably and where you start to struggle. Your level is the highest one at which you answer at least 3 of its 4 questions correctly, as long as you got at least half right at every level below it. If no level qualifies, the result is below N5, with no certificate.

What does the Japanese Level Test cover?

Grammar, Vocabulary & Kanji, Reading and Listening: Grammar (verb forms and tenses, sentence structure and agreement, complex and formal structures); Vocabulary & Kanji (kanji readings, everyday and workplace words, advanced words and their misuse); Reading (signs, notices and messages, main ideas and detail, inference, attitude and tone); Listening (numbers, times and facts, announcements and conversations, implied meaning and tone).

Can I retake the Japanese Level Test?

Yes. The bank holds 60 questions, so a retake draws questions you haven't seen. If your result is below N5 you can retake after 30 minutes.

Is this the JLPT?

No. The JLPT is run by the Japan Foundation and JEES. This free test reports a level on the same N5–N1 scale so you know which JLPT level to book.

Can I use this certificate for a Japanese work visa?

No. Visa programmes require official results such as JLPT or JFT-Basic. Use this test to check your level and to show your skills on a CV.

Which Japanese level do employers ask for?

Many IT and engineering employers ask for N3 for daily work and N2 for client-facing roles; N1 is expected for translation and business-critical communication.

Do I need to read kanji?

N5 questions use mostly hiragana and basic kanji. Higher levels use more kanji, as real texts do.

How is my level calculated?

You answer one question per skill at each level from N5 to N1. Your level is the highest where you get three in four right, provided no easier level falls below half.

Can I retake it?

Yes. Retakes draw different questions from a larger bank.

How much do Science of Apps certifications cost?

Nothing. There is no fee to take a test, to receive the certificate, to have it emailed or to verify it, and no sign-up.

Do the certificates expire?

No. Every certificate is dated, so it always shows when you passed. Retake a test any time for a newer date or a higher score.

Can I add the certificate to LinkedIn?

Yes. After you pass, Add to LinkedIn opens the Licenses & certifications form with the certificate name, Science of Apps as the issuer, the issue date, your credential ID and the verification link filled in. You can also download it as a PDF or PNG, and it's emailed to you as a PDF.

How can an employer verify my certificate?

Every certificate has a credential ID and a QR code. Scanning it, or entering the ID at scienceofapps.com/certification/verify/, shows the holder's name, the certification, the score and the issue date from our records.

Are these accredited qualifications?

No. They are Science of Apps' own assessments of applied skill. They aren't issued by a university or standards body, and they work best alongside a portfolio that shows the skills in real work.
