AI skills in demand
for 2027 and beyond

In the next six months the AI skills in most demand will be briefing AI agents, checking AI output, writing for AI search, spotting AI-made scams and DPDP privacy compliance. In one to two years: EU AI Act governance, AI-first data analysis and redesigning workflows around agents. Beyond that: managing fleets of agents, human judgement and AI-assisted teaching.

Quick answer: Which AI skills will be in demand in the next few years?

  1. Next 6 months (to April 2027) — briefing and delegating to ai agents; checking ai output before it ships; writing for ai answer engines (geo / aeo); everyday security against ai-made scams; dpdp privacy compliance (india).
  2. 1 to 2 years (2027–2028) — eu ai act and ai governance; data analysis with ai as the default; healthcare revenue-cycle paperwork; redesigning team workflows around agents.
  3. Beyond 2 years (2029 and later) — managing fleets of agents (the 'agent boss'); judgement, creativity and resilience; ai-assisted teaching and tutoring.

Key takeaways

  • The shift is from asking AI questions to delegating work to it, so briefing and checking AI become core skills.
  • Regulation sets hard dates: India's DPDP duties from May 2027, EU AI Act high-risk duties from December 2027.
  • Demand for data, security and healthcare-admin work keeps rising, and AI is becoming the default tool in each.
  • 22 skills from the forecast are already in the free library; two areas are on watch until the tools settle.

Every forecast about AI and work makes the same mistake: it lists technologies instead of tasks. Nobody hires for "large language models". They hire someone to close the books faster, ship code that doesn't break, answer customers in their language and stay on the right side of new privacy laws. So this forecast asks a narrower question — which AI-assisted tasks will people need to do well, and when — and answers it with dated evidence rather than predictions about models.

The forecast at a glance

The AI skills in demand fall into three horizons: delegating to and checking AI now, governing it and making it the default for analysis within two years, and managing teams of agents after that.

How we made this forecast

We looked for skills where three independent signals agree, and dated each one.

Diagram of 3 steps for how we made this forecast: 1. What people use AI for; 2. Which jobs and skills are growing; 3. What employers and regulators require.
How we made this forecast
  1. What people use AI for — usage studies of Claude 1, ChatGPT 2 and Microsoft Copilot 6.
  2. Which jobs and skills are growing — the WEF Future of Jobs Report 3, US BLS projections 4 and LinkedIn Jobs on the Rise 5.
  3. What employers and regulators require — AI mentions in job postings 7, enterprise adoption 89, and hard legal dates 1211.

Where the evidence is a survey of expectations, we say so. Where a date could move — the EU AI Act timeline already has — we say that too.

Next 6 months: to April 2027

Briefing and delegating to AI agents

Assistants are moving from answering to doing: automation is already about three-quarters of AI API use, and leaders expect agents on their teams within 18 months. The bottleneck becomes the human brief — a clear goal, scope, acceptance tests and limits. 1913

Add now — in the library: AI coding agent brief, AI feature spec.

Checking AI output before it ships

Most companies use AI but few have scaled it, and Gartner expects over 40% of agentic projects to be cancelled for unclear value and weak risk controls. The skill that separates useful AI work from embarrassing AI work is verification: fact-checking drafts and building evaluation sets. 810

Add now — in the library: AI draft fact-checker, AI feature spec, Pull request reviewer.

Writing for AI answer engines (GEO / AEO)

Seeking information is one of the three biggest uses of ChatGPT, so a growing share of research starts in an AI answer rather than a list of links. Pages that state answers plainly, with specific and attributable facts, are the ones assistants can quote. 2

Add now — in the library: AI search (GEO) rewriter, SEO content brief.

Everyday security against AI-made scams

Networks and cybersecurity is the second fastest-growing skill to 2030 and information security analysts are among the fastest-growing jobs. Generative AI makes phishing fluent and personal, so every employee needs a quick, reliable way to check a message. 34

Add now — in the library: Phishing email checker, Security code review.

DPDP privacy compliance (India)

The DPDP Rules' main duties — notices, consent, children's data and breach notification — apply from May 2027. Most Indian startups have no privacy team, so readiness checks and plain-language notices will be in demand through the first half of 2027. 12

Add now — in the library: DPDP Act readiness check, Privacy notice drafter.

1 to 2 years: 2027–2028

EU AI Act and AI governance

High-risk duties under the EU AI Act now start in December 2027 for stand-alone systems such as hiring and credit tools, and August 2028 for AI inside regulated products. Any team selling AI into Europe will need to classify its systems and document oversight. 11

Add now — in the library: EU AI Act risk check, AI feature spec.

Data analysis with AI as the default

Nearly half of data and analytics job postings already mention AI, and data scientists are projected to grow 34% by 2034. Expect plain-English querying and AI-assisted analysis to become a baseline skill for every analyst and manager, not a specialism. 743

Add now — in the library: SQL from plain English, A/B test reader, KPI drop investigator.

Healthcare revenue-cycle paperwork

Healthcare reimbursement specialist is LinkedIn's sixth fastest-growing US job and healthcare dominates long-run job growth, while administrative work is where AI applies most. Appeals, prior authorisation and patient letters are high-volume, rules-based writing. 546

Add now — in the library: Claim denial appeal, Prior authorisation checklist.

Redesigning team workflows around agents

Leaders expect to use agents to expand capacity, but agent use is scaled in no more than 10% of companies in any single function. The next wave of demand is for people who can map a process and decide which steps an agent should own and where a human signs off. 98

Watching, not added yet. Add a dedicated 'agent workflow designer' skill once agent platforms settle on shared hand-off and approval patterns. Until then, start with Process mapper and SOP writer.

Beyond 2 years: 2029 and later

Managing fleets of agents (the 'agent boss')

Leaders expect teams to be training and managing AI agents as part of their jobs within five years. That means setting goals for agents, reviewing their work in bulk and handling exceptions — a management skill, not a prompting one. 9

Watching, not added yet. Add when mainstream assistants let one person supervise several agents with shared logs and approvals.

Judgement, creativity and resilience

Alongside AI and data, employers rank creative thinking and resilience, flexibility and agility among the fastest-growing skills to 2030. As AI drafts more, the human contribution shifts to choosing the problem, critiquing the work and owning the decision. 3

Add now — in the library: Design critique partner, Idea stress test, Architecture decision record.

AI-assisted teaching and tutoring

Education is already the second-largest use of Claude and grew from 9% to 15% of conversations in 2025. Over several years, expect lesson design, assessment and personalised practice to be built with AI by default — making teaching skills that direct AI well more valuable. 1

Add now — in the library: Lesson plan builder, Explain at three levels, Exam study plan.

What we're not adding yet

Two areas have strong evidence of future demand but no stable way of working yet, so a skill written today would be out of date in months.

  • Redesigning team workflows around agents — Add a dedicated 'agent workflow designer' skill once agent platforms settle on shared hand-off and approval patterns.
  • Managing fleets of agents (the 'agent boss') — Add when mainstream assistants let one person supervise several agents with shared logs and approvals.

Gartner's warning that over 40% of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by the end of 2027 10 is a reason for patience here: the safer bet is the briefing and checking skills that every agent project needs.

What to do about it this quarter

The practical move is to pair one general skill with one specific to your role.

Checklist: What to do about it this quarter — Install a briefing skill; Install a checking skill; Check your compliance dates; Pick your role's first skill.

How this forecast could be wrong

Usage studies describe today's users, who skew towards early adopters and knowledge workers. Employer surveys capture intentions, which often run ahead of hiring. Regulatory dates move: the EU's high-risk deadline was pushed back once already 11. And a single new capability — reliable long-running agents, for example — could pull the "beyond" horizon forward. We will review this forecast every six months and date each change.

Frequently asked questions

What AI skills should I learn first?

Learn to brief an AI clearly (goal, context, format, limits) and to check its output before you rely on it. Those two skills apply to every job and every tool, and they are what separates useful AI work from rework. Then add the skills specific to your role.

Will prompt engineering still matter in 2027?

The tricks matter less as models improve, but the underlying skill — giving an AI the context, constraints and success criteria a capable colleague would need — matters more as AI moves from answering questions to doing multi-step work as an agent.

Which jobs will need AI skills the most?

Research on real AI use points to software, data, office and administrative work, sales and other information-heavy jobs, with education rising fast. Healthcare administration, security and compliance are growing areas where AI handles a lot of the paperwork.

How was this forecast made?

We combined three dated signals: what people use AI assistants for (Anthropic, NBER, Microsoft Research), which jobs and skills are growing (WEF, BLS, LinkedIn) and what employers and regulators require (Indeed, McKinsey, the DPDP Rules and the EU AI Act). It is an editorial judgement, reviewed October 2026.

Are AI agents going to replace these skills?

Agents take over steps, not accountability. Every forecast item here is about directing, checking or governing AI work — skills that become more valuable as agents do more, because someone still has to set the goal and sign off the result.
