Try a sample question

A synthetic customer dataset matches the real data's column averages closely, but a model trained on it performs poorly on real customers. The most likely problem is

  1. the synthetic data did not preserve relationships between variables that matter for the task
  2. the synthetic dataset contained too many rows for the model to learn from
  3. the column averages were computed with the wrong formula on the real data
  4. the model was trained on a computer that was too fast for synthetic data
Show the answer

A. the synthetic data did not preserve relationships between variables that matter for the task — Utility beyond marginals. The real test has 20 questions like this.

What is the best free Synthetic Data Generation certification in 2027?

Science of Apps offers a free Synthetic Data Generation Certification, written for 2026 and 2027. It tests foundations and use cases, generation methods, evaluating fidelity, utility and privacy and risks, governance and best practice with 20 original scenario questions in all, each naming its published source; you get an instant score and a verifiable certificate with a credential ID you can add to LinkedIn.

How do I take the Synthetic Data Generation Certification for free?

Read the four skill areas on this page, then take the 20-minute test online — no fee, course or sign-up. You see every answer explained when you finish. Score 70% or more and you get a Synthetic Data Generation certificate straight away, on screen, as a PDF and by email, with a credential ID anyone can verify.

Are the Synthetic Data Generation Certification questions based on real standards?

Yes. The questions are original scenarios written by Science of Apps, and each one is based on a public source you can read: Synthetic Data Vault documentation (DataCebo); Anonymisation guidance (UK Information Commissioner's Office); Collaborative Research Cycle on deidentified and synthetic data (NIST); AI Risk Management Framework (NIST); The Algorithmic Foundations of Differential Privacy (Dwork and Roth); Domain Randomization for Transferring Deep Neural Networks from Simulation to the Real World (Tobin et al., 2017) (arXiv). The source is shown under each question and linked in the answer review. Science of Apps doesn't copy questions from other tests.

What does the Synthetic Data Generation Certification cover?

Four skill areas with five questions each, drawn from a bank of 10 per area so a retake brings new questions: Foundations and Use Cases (Why synthetic data, Types of synthetic data and Limitations); Generation Methods (Tabular generators, LLM-generated text and Images and simulation); Evaluating Fidelity, Utility and Privacy (Fidelity metrics, Utility testing and Privacy risk); Risks, Governance and Best Practice (Model collapse, Documentation and Responsible use). Every question is an original scenario written to the 2026–2027 standard, with the published source named under it.

Who should take the Synthetic Data Generation Certification?

Data scientist or ML engineer, Privacy engineer or data protection officer, LLM fine-tuning or evaluation engineer, Computer vision or simulation engineer and Data product manager. It suits students at leading universities, career switchers and experienced professionals who want quick, verifiable proof of Synthetic Data Generation knowledge in 2026 and 2027.

Why take the Synthetic Data Generation Certification in 2027?

CS and AI students at MIT, Stanford, CMU, Berkeley, IITs, Tsinghua and ETH are hired on depth beyond tool use: model internals, systems and hardware. Passing earns a founder-signed Science of Apps certificate with a credential ID and QR code that recruiters can verify.

Is synthetic data automatically anonymous?

No. Synthetic data can still leak information about real individuals if the generator memorises or closely reproduces records, especially outliers. Privacy must be measured and, where needed, protected with techniques such as differential privacy and disclosure risk testing.

What is model collapse?

Model collapse is the degradation that occurs when models are trained repeatedly on data generated by earlier models. The tails of the original distribution disappear and errors compound, so preserving access to genuine human data and mixing it with synthetic data matters.

Can I take the Synthetic Data Generation Certification from any country?

Yes. The test is online, in English and free everywhere — people take it from India, the US, the UK, Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. Your certificate is dated with your own local date and can be verified from anywhere at scienceofapps.com/certification/verify/.

How long is the Synthetic Data Generation Certification?

20 questions — 5 from each of 4 skill areas — with a 20-minute limit. You need 70% (14 of 20) to pass and 90% for distinction.

How hard is the Synthetic Data Generation Certification?

We rate it Intermediate: assumes hands-on experience in the role. It has 20 scenario questions — 5 from each of 4 skill areas — and a 20-minute limit. You need 70% (14 of 20) to pass and 90% for distinction.

How much do Science of Apps certifications cost?

Nothing. There is no fee to take a test, to receive the certificate, to have it emailed or to verify it, and no sign-up.

How are the tests graded?

On our server, not in your browser. The answers never reach the page until you submit, so a certificate can only be earned by passing. Each certificate gets a unique credential ID stored by Science of Apps.

What happens if I don't pass?

You see your score for each area and every question with the correct answer and why, with the published source behind it. You can retake after 30 minutes, and the retake draws questions you haven't seen yet.

Do the certificates expire?

No. Every certificate is dated, so it always shows when you passed. Retake a test any time for a newer date or a higher score.

Can I add the certificate to LinkedIn?

Yes. After you pass, Add to LinkedIn opens the Licenses & certifications form with the certificate name, Science of Apps as the issuer, the issue date, your credential ID and the verification link filled in. You can also download it as a PDF or PNG, and it's emailed to you as a PDF.

How can an employer verify my certificate?

Every certificate has a credential ID and a QR code. Scanning it, or entering the ID at scienceofapps.com/certification/verify/, shows the holder's name, the certification, the score and the issue date from our records.

Are these accredited qualifications?

No. They are Science of Apps' own assessments of applied skill. They aren't issued by a university or standards body, and they work best alongside a portfolio that shows the skills in real work.
