Physical traders buy, store, ship and sell the actual commodity and manage logistics and quality. Financial traders use futures, swaps and options, which are usually cash-settled or closed out before delivery, to take or hedge price risk.

Who uses commodity hedging?

Producers (oil companies, farmers, miners) hedge against falling prices; consumers (airlines, refiners, utilities, food makers) hedge against rising prices. Traders and investors provide liquidity and take the other side.
